World of Warcraft is nearing its seventeenth anniversary. Over nearly two decades, there have been hundreds if not thousands of rare items, mounts, creatures, and much more. This list will focus on ten of the rarest and most improbable things players can see in World of Warcraft.

Some of the things listed below sell for thousands of dollars of actual currency. Others are incredibly difficult to find, with days of effort required to encounter them. Any player will be lucky to come across any of the following while traversing the many maps in the game.

10 Poseidus

WoW Poseidus

The rare seahorse creature can be found roaming the Abyssal Depths and Shimmering Expanse. To this day there are players that search and search for the rare enemy. When killed, Poseidus drops the Reins of Poseidus, a legendary mount. The mount is Poseidus himself, which is kind of confusing. Poseidus remains one of the hardest free roam creatures to find in the game.

9 Murlock Costume

WoW Murloc Costume

As an item that was only available to Blizzcon attendees more than fourteen years ago, the costume is extremely rare. The only way to get it is by purchasing a code online for upwards of $1,500. The Murloc Suit became a very popular item in 2007 because of how detailed it was compared to the original WoW character models. God luck finding one of these on today's servers.

8 Amalgamation of Light

Bound Lightspawn Shadowlands (1)

The rare mob in Revendreth is difficult to find because a lot of gamers fight the Amalgamation to pick up the Bound Lightspawn. To initiate the spawn, people have to activate the three mirrors in the Ember Ward on the map. Those that do get the Bound Lightspawn have one of the rarest battle pets in WoW. The Amalgamation will not spawn if it was recently summoned, and it is unclear exactly how long it takes for the three mirrors to reset.

7 Proto-Dragons

WoW proto drake

Blue Proto-Drakes in the Storm Peaks are notoriously annoying to find. They spawn so infrequently that it could take an actual day or two in-game to find one. The effort is worth the reward, however, as the Proto-Drakes become mounts when they are defeated. Grab a book, take a seat, and buckle up for a boring wait for these guys.

6 Big Love Rocket

WoW Big Love Rocket

This extremely rare mount was introduced in a Valentine's day event years ago. Using the random dungeon finder, players received what was called a Heart-Shaped Box. When opened, it had a chance to contain the rocket mount. A total of 14 boxes can be acquired during the event, with one available per day.

The drop chance of the mount was less than one in three thousand. The Heart-Shaped boxes are still included in the event every year, but the drop chance is so low that it would theoretically take several lifetimes to find.

5 Chromatic Sword

WoW Chromatic Sword

The Chromatic Sword was the only item in the game that had a unique glow effect, making it one of the most popular weapons around the time it was added. The only way to find the sword was to kill an enemy called Scale Belly, who only spawned in a Stranglethorn Vale rare mob. Initially, the sword did not have a glow, so most people got rid of it.

However, those that kept the plain-looking sword hit the jackpot when Burning Crusade was released. The sword mysteriously received the rainbow glow, becoming one of the rarest and expensive items of all time. Today, the sword has a much higher drop chance from Scale Belly, and the glow effect is not as impressive.

4 El Pollo Grande

WoW El Pollo Grande

The big chicken is still the only pollo mount in WoW. It was obtained from a trading card that appeared in less than .5 percent of the WoW Trading Card Game's Fields of Honor booster packs.  The mount was rare then, and years later, the cards that are on the market go for more than $2,000 USD. That is a historically steep price for a World Of Warcraft mount.

3 Haunted Memento

WoW Haunted Memento

During the Wrath of the Lich King event called Scourge Invasion, random mobs could drop an item called Haunted Memento. The only effect of the item is that a Shade NPC would constantly follow the bearer around. It could not be attacked and basically just stalks the character around forever. Because of how long it has been since the event, the item sells for a few hundred thousand gold.

2 Big Blizzard Bear

WoW Big Blizzard Bear

The polar bear mount was a unique giveaway for attendees of Blizzcon 2008, which was a long time ago. Blizzard's bear is now very rare, and it is hard to find a code for one on eBay or Amazon. When the cards do pop up, they go for upwards of $1,000 USD. Anyone smart enough to hold onto this card has a lot more money in their pockets as a result.

1 The Murky Pet

The Murky Pet

Only attendees of Blizzcon 2005 were able to get this astronomically rare item. As it was the first year of Blizzcon, there were only a few hundred people that received the card to unlock the pet. Some sixteen years later, there are essentially no unscratched cards left. The Murky Pet is owned by the most dedicated lifelong fans of the game. Anyone that has this item either has deep pockets or has been a player since the beginning.
