The zombie universe is now totally united as players across PlayStation, Xbox and PC can finally play with each other following World War Z's newest update. The update also introduces a new class and weapon.

Cross-platform gaming has been a highly anticipated feature in all games for many years now. In the previous generation of consoles the selection of either PlayStation, Xbox or PC meant more than just exclusive titles or hardware capability, it meant limiting one's self to play with only those with similar taste in hardware. In recent years however, game developers seem to be listening to the calls for cross-platform gaming, as it starts to make more frequent appearances in games like World War Z.

The game adaptation of Brad Pitt's 2013 zombie film has actually featured cross-platform gaming for a while now, permitting Xbox and PC players to join forces against the undead, but the PS4 has been absent from the team-up. PlayStation has a history of guarding its clientele, with Sony previously denying cross-platform play in several other games. While this notoriety may hinder future gamer's console decisions, for the time being Sony is choosing to selectively cooperate, most recently with this Dronemaster update.

Speaking of Dronemaster, this update will also provide gamers with a new titular class. This new Dronemaster class will appropriately utilize drones to support their team against the swarms of ravenous zombies. This addition marks the first new class added into the game since its release in 2019, and the 7th total. On top of this a new rare weapon has been added in the form of the ACW-20. This semi-automatic grenade launcher packs a serious punch, sure to be heavily favored by those players who enjoy the frontline action.

Affectionately known as the honorary follow-up to the wildly popular Left 4 Dead 2World War Z is receiving some attention from fans of the co-op zombie shoot-em-up, even going so far as to give Saber Interactive cause to subtly release a Game of the Year edition. Being one of the few games to maintain a popular position in this genre is paramount to ensuring future cross-platform play. With players demanding a future where they can play together in games as popular as this one, developers are to be sure that they follow suit, lest they fall behind in the past of gaming.

Although not all games are currently cross-platform, the future is looking bright for gamers. Even free updates like this one allowing players to cooperate can only help the future of gaming. With the next-gen of consoles on the horizon, one can only hope that it becomes a heavily favored feature of future developers.

World War Z is currently available on PC, PS4 and Xbox and its Game of the Year edition will also be available for the Nintendo Switch at an unconfirmed date.
