A slew of issues, such as the manga's medically necessitated hiatus and a middling first season adaptation by Dragon Ball Super studio Toei Animation, has prevented World Trigger, an engrossing sci-fi battle tactics story, from reaching the pop-culture heights of its contemporaries. Now, World Trigger is finally continuing the anime's story after the successful 2020 release of season two, with the show's third season set to premiere this Fall.

World Trigger is based on the manga by Daisuke Ashihara and follows high school student Osamu Mikumo living a double life as an agent of Border, an organization protecting Japan from aliens known as Neighbors. When Osamu befriends powerful humanoid "neighbor" Yuma Kuga, he forms a border agent squad with Yuma as well as 13-year-old sniper Chika, whom Osamu is sworn to protect. In addition to protecting their city from Neighbor invasions, the squad vies to quickly increase their rank in hopes of earning distinctions high enough to be eligible for away missions to the Neighbors' world.

Toei Animation released a teaser trailer for the third season of World Trigger on August 15th, putting the series' action and characters in prime focus. Many of the series' Japanese voice actors, including those for Osamu, Yuma, and Chika, will be returning for the third season, though the identities of many key staff members have been kept under wraps as of this writing. World Trigger is one of many anime series currently in production at Toei Animation, as they are also working on One Piece and Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai.

The original World Trigger manga series debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2013, with the anime's first season premiering shortly after in 2014. The first season ended in March 2016 and did not continue, as Daisuke Ashihara was suffering from cervical spondylosis and was unable to create more source material through the manga's weekly serialization in Shonen Jump for a year and a half's time. Many criticisms were directed toward the execution of World Trigger's first season, but the 2nd season, which debuted in 2020, was lauded for its vastly improved animation and story pacing, which are trends that the third season is aiming to continue.

The vast majority of anime adaptations of recent Shonen Jump manga such as My Hero Academia, Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Demon Slayer have been capable of spawning a zeitgeist with fans all around the world. However, the aforementioned issues have prevented World Trigger from attaining the same level of fame, though its fans are certainly passionate.

Fans of World Trigger will surely be happy to see the story continue. And hopefully, as sites such as Crunchyroll and Funimation have made it easier than ever for anime fans to find and watch new shows, more anime fans will be persuaded to give World Trigger a chance.

World Trigger's third season will begin airing on October 9th, 2021.
