World of Warcraft: Shadowlands players have finally stepped foot into the afterlife, exploring each realm of death on their way to Level 60. While questing through each zone's story and testing out Covenant abilities, some heroes are finding artifacts of untold power. Although any gear found this way will quickly be replaced by endgame equipment, Hunters can also stumble upon an item that gives them a new cosmetic ability.

As part of their class fantasy, Hunters can tame the wild creatures of Azeroth, leading players to seek out many amazing models as loyal companions. Over many expansions, the number of tamable beasts has only increased with Shadowlands adding alpacas, coursers, and mammoths. However, the recent pre-patch also gave Forsaken hunters the natural ability to tame undead creatures as pets, and now all other hunters can seek that power for themselves.

Simple Tome of Bone-Binding

To tame undead beasts as a non-undead hunter, players must acquire the Simple Tome of Bone-Binding from Maldraxxus. The item is a bind-on-pickup zone drop, so the hunter character must have already entered the Shadowlands and finished Bastion's main story. Once used, however, it unlocks the ability to tame undead pets account-wide, meaning any new alts can have their own slightly-rotting companion while leveling.

Best Places to Farm

While the tome can drop from any mob in Maldraxxus, many players are reporting that the best chances comes from various elites wandering throughout the zone. Hunters looking to grind the item as soon as possible should stay in the Theater of Pain, where players do their first story chapter, because of the elite NPCs that respawn quickly as quest targets. Alternatively, the main questline will eventually lead players into the Plaguefall dungeon where everything has a chance to drop the tome as well.

There have even been rare reports that the tome can drop in other zones like Ardenweald, but Maldraxxus remains the most likely place to find it. In the end, the drop rate isn't terrible, and every hunter should be able to obtain this item in World of Warcraft's foreseeable future.

Afterwards, players have no shortage of choices when it comes to undead companions such as many old dungeon bosses, risen corpses of Zandalari dinosaurs, or even some dreaded scourge creations. Combined with the recent stable size upgrades and taming cloud serpents, it's only a matter of time until hunters get to collect more new beasts in the Shadowlands.
