World of Warcraft has finally launched the eight expansion for its MMORPG, called Shadowlands. Now that the launch servers aren't quite so bogged down for WoW, players might be looking to start the new expansion. Here is how to do it.

Getting Started

In order to start the new expansion, World of Warcraft players on both Horde and Alliance side will get a quest called A Chilling Summons. Players will have to head to their capital city, which is Stormwind for Alliance and Orgrimmar for Horde. There, players will be able to access the Icecrown Citadel portal. Take the portal and talk to the quest-giver, the Lich King Bolvar.

Story of Sylvanas

Sylvanas shattered the Helm of Domination with her power, linking herself to the Helm's pieces. With the pieces, players will be able to track her. She's in the Shadowlands, and players will need to participate in a ritual to find Sylvanas and hunt her down. Once players are ready, they will be transported to the Shadowlands, completing the second step of the quest chain, Through the Shattered Sky. There, players will get some answers to unanswered questions in World of Warcraft.

Next Steps

Darion Mograine will task players with two quests, both part of this questline. In A Fractured Blade and Mawsworn Menace, players need to find Ebon Blade allies and defeat the Mawsworn. The next step continues player's inching closer to the Maw.

  • Fear to Tread - Look for clues to help the Ebon Blade, and find World of Warcraft's Thrall and Jaina.
  • A Flight from Darkness - Find shelter for a wounded and injured Thrall. Jaina will help with information once Thrall is safe inside the Forlorn Respite.
  • Field Seance and Speaking to the Dead - Darion Mograine needs help to talk with the nearby shades, forcing the dead souls of Maw to speak.
  • Soul in Hand - Returning to Jaina, players find that she considers herself too weak to find Sylvanas and save Anduin.
  • The Afflictor's Key - Find the keys to The Lion's Cage, where the missing Sylvanas caged Auduin.
  • An Undeserved Fate - While trying to free Auduin, players will find other keys to release other souls locked away.
  • From the Mouths of Madness - After Auduin is free, players need to speak to Darion Mograine again.
  • By and Down the River - Darion Mograine has gotten some information from the captured soul, and finally has a way out of the Maw.
  • Wounds Beyond Flesh and A Good Axe - Hunt for Mawsworn weapons for Baine and Thrall.
  • Draw Out the Darkness - Return to Baine and draw out the spirits that haunt him with the Mawsworn Weapons.
  • The Path to Salvation - Jaina uses her magic in order to hide everyone from sight, so players can slip past some enemies without fighting them.
  • Stand as One - The Waystone reacts only to the player's presence. Players and everyone with them will have to fight the hordes of enemies that spawn here while it charges. World of Warcraft players shouldn't have too much trouble fighting them off at level 50 after the level squish.

These quests are fairly linear, not giving players a whole lot of choices. But don't worry. Later on, there will be quests outside of the first quest chain, like the quest Pride or Unit, where players have to choose between Larions and the Phalynx.

The Waystone is Charged

Now that Waystone is charged, players can leave the Maw. They find themselves in Oribos, the capital city of Shadowlands. Players will earn Into the Maw, an achievement that will allow them to start leveling in the newest area in the World of Warcraft. Players will need to wander the new city and find the important WoW NPCs, like the Herbalism trainer and others.

World of Warcraft is available for PC.
