World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is currently alpha testing for its anticipated launch later this year. Some players in the alpha discovered dialogue that suggested World of Warcraft could be doing a several-year timeskip between Shadowlands and Dragonflight.

The dialogue was discovered by an Alliance World of Warcraft player who completed the Dragon Isles introduction questline. The dialogue was held between King Genn Greymane and Spymaster Matthias Shaw.

During the dialogue, Shaw informs Greymane that Wrathion–scion of the black dragonflight–was asking after Anduin. The events of Shadowlands put a great deal of stress on the former High King of the Alliance, and he has not been seen since the events of Eternity’s End. However, Shaw also states that it has been “several years” since the end of the Shadowlands expansion–a potentially big development.

As a disclaimer, it is important to note that this dialogue is currently unavailable on the Dragonflight alpha, though it was previously. That means this plot point could be changed before it reaches live servers, or it could be scrapped completely. Alternatively, it could be a world state it does not want to confirm quite yet.

World of Warcraft fans have been wondering if the MMO would be doing a timeskip since Shadowlands first launched. On several occasions during the expansion, players were informed that time works differently in the Shadowlands. Many thought they might find time had progressed further once they returned to Azeroth. Though that is not how this potential timeskip seems to have happened, it could still happen all the same.

Many players are intrigued by the potential timeskip in World of Warcraft. Though time progresses from expansion to expansion, never before has World of Warcraft jumped forward several years between them. Players are interested to see what kind of developments could be in store for their favorite characters and cultures if the timeskip ends up being added to the game.

On the converse, some players aren’t sure what to make of the timeskip just yet. Some roleplayers are already scrambling to figure out what their characters have been doing during and after Shadowlands. Other players are concerned that WoW won’t make the best of the timeskip–if the time is not used to rebuild and change the world state, it might as well not exist in the first place. World of Warcraft fans will have to wait and see if the timeskip actually happens, and if it does, how Azeroth changes because of it.

World of Warcraft is available now on PC. The Dragonflight expansion plans to launch later this year.
