Players are diving into World of Warcraft: Shadowlands headfirst. They're enjoying the lore, doing quests, and hunting secret mounts from dusk til' dawn.

As usual, there are about a million different things to do in World of Warcraft's latest expansion. One common thread running through these is the new currency: Anima. This is a resource that players are going to want as much of as possible for a few reasons. There's a lot to find and a few uses to make of it, so here's a guide on Anima, what it is, and how to get it.

First: What is Anima?

Anima's role in Shadowlands could be summed up as a power source, or currency, but really it's both and more. Anima is the literal essence of souls, and everyone who comes to the Shadowlands has it. More accomplishments means more Anima, so central story figures tend to have a lot of it. All the factions in the Shadowlands want it, and players can get it for various rewards.

Step 1: Actually Getting Anima

Anima can be obtained from most endgame content in Shadowlands and is mostly designed so casual players can get it without hassle. After reaching max level, players can join a Covenant and unlock World Quests. These give Anima, providing an easy source of it for players pretty much whenever they like. There's also a list of "adventures" similar to the Mission Table before it, and the adventure quests listed there also give Anima as a reward. Finally, certain quests called Covenant Callings can be unlocked by speaking to NPCs at the home base of a player's chosen Covenant. In addition to Covenant specific rewards, these quests also grant Anima. This raises the question of why Anima is in such high demand if it's this easy to get. Just one of the many things about Shadowlands that doesn't make sense we guess.

Step 2: Using Anima

Anima is used by the four Covenants of Shadowlands. Each one has three different uses that Anima can be poured into. The first two are the same for each Covenant, creating a transportation network and unlocking additional activity. The third is unique to each Covenant, creating a minigame that provides various rewards. Using Anima to strengthen Covenants this way brings Renown to players, which further helps unlock Covenant specific rewards.

That's about it. Don't fret about collecting Anima too much. Unlike other content, it's not a true endgame grind, so there's no need to go after it night and day. The ease of obtaining Anima is definitely one thing players will like about Shadowlands.
