World of Warcraft: Shadowlands introduced the sprawling zone of Zereth Mortis in its final patch, titled "Eternity's End." Zereth Mortis represents the cradle of creation in the Warcraft universe, and as such, many treasure of antiquity lie buried and scattered across the zone for the player to find and obtain. Some of these treasure chests offer unique cosmetic rewards and can only be looted once, while others offer a continuous source of loot restricted by a daily cooldown. The Locked Provis Cache falls into the latter category.

For World of Warcraft players to get their hands on the loot that awaits within, however, they must first meet some important prerequisites. Namely, they must complete the main Zereth Mortis campaign up-to-and-including Chapter 3, as well as complete the automa Firim's introductory questline until "Materials of Creation" is done. This will unlock the tools needed to pry open the contents of a Provis Cache, but not before grinding out some necessary materials.

With the prerequisites met, players can now ask Firim for a spare Forge-tap, which they will use to tap into the hard-to-miss engraved spheres that loom out of the ground across Zereth Mortis. Tapping into the orbs will envelop them in an arcane glow for a few seconds, and should yield Ephemera Strands for the player, as well as Trace Enigmets which are used in unlocking a unique Pocopoc costume. To obtain a Provis Cache Key, players will need to collect fifteen Emphera Strands with the Forge-tap, and later combine them in their inventory to form an Ephemera Orb.

Opening the Ephemera Orb should yield them a Provis Cache Key – however, it should be noted that the drop chance is not guaranteed, and in the worst case scenario, World of Warcraft players should be prepared to gather several stacks of fifteen Emphera Strands before they get lucky. Some players have reported needing as little as three attempts to obtain a Provis Cache Key from assembly, while others needed as many as 13.

With a Provis Cache Key in hand, the next and final step for players is to make their way to the western entrance of the Forge of Afterlives, in the innermost part of Zereth Mortis. The exact map coordinates for the Locked Provis Cache are (41.96, 51.85). While the Provis Cache does not hold any unique loot on its own, it represents a steady daily income of Cosmic Flux, which is a new currency introduced in "Eternity's End" that allows players to upgrade their Shadowlands legendaries to Rank 7.

As with any treasure in the zone, opening a Provis Cache also counts towards unlocking flying in Zereth Mortis.
