World of Warcraft players have discovered a suspicious fish in the Public Test Realm for Dragonflight Patch 10.1. Many of these World of Warcraft fans think this particular creature is further evidence of Old God activity in Dragonflight.

Dragonflight’s next patch, Embers of Neltharion, is currently available on World of Warcraft’s PTR. This means players have access to the new Zaralek Cavern zone, as well as many files and details giving hints as to the story chapter. The patch does not have an official release date but is expected to arrive in May.

Deep in the crystal lakes of Zaralek Cavern in Dragonflight, players have discovered a creature called a Deepdrifter Megrim. This three-eyed, large-toothed fish is a rather frightful sight and may seem out of place in the otherwise beautiful and idyllic cave lake. However, this particular fish may be a clue that the Old Gods of World of Warcraft may be active in Dragonflight–or at least confirmation of their lingering presence in Embers of Neltharion.

The Old God N’Zoth is often associated with sea creatures, including fish like the Deepdrifter Megrim. In the "Warbringers" short featuring Azshara, N’Zoth first approached the Highbourne queen as a fish before revealing his massive tentacled form. Additionally, a similar Abyssal Megrim fish was found outside Azshara’s palace during Battle for Azeroth. N’Zoth is also attributed to be the Old God responsible for corrupting Neltharion into Deathwing, so it would make sense that his presence was felt in the fallen Aspect’s realm in Embers of Neltharion.

Many World of Warcraft fans are eager to find out if the Old Gods will play a direct role in Dragonflight. Though the last of the Old Gods was defeated in Battle for Azeroth, evidence in Dragonflight has hinted N’Zoth could return in the future. Likewise, a mysterious fifth Old God is rumored to still be at large, sparking many theories among players. New evidence of the Lovecraftian nightmares is always a big hit with World of Warcraft lore hounds.

So far, World of Warcraft has not given any solid confirmation that the Old Gods themselves will play a major role in Dragonflight, even if their legacy does. That said, Battle for Azeroth was originally marketed as an expansion focusing on World of Warcraft’s faction war before pivoting into an Old Gods expansion pack. With so many hints towards their involvement, it is possible Dragonflight could still see the Old Gods take a more direct hand in future events.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC.
