Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft Classic is getting ready to enter its next phase and because of high server populations, players are being asked to leave some with longer queues. Wrath of the Lich King Classic is coming on September 26, and as a result of the pre-patch being added to World of Warcraft Classic servers already, many players have returned or come to the Blizzard MMO for the first time.

While many of the fresh start World of Warcraft Classic servers like Skyfury and Maladath are experiencing long wait times, established servers like Benediction, Grobbulus, and Faerlina are also filling quickly. Multiple YouTubers from North America and Europe have made videos warning their communities about having to wait upwards of two hours, and although some are using remote desktop to remain logged in, others are left to wait for over an hour to play the game. In response to the community outcry on the forums, Blizzard has made a blue post that recommends transferring to less populated servers like Sulfuras or Mograine, and lists some other ways the developers are addressing the situation.

According to WoW Classic Game Producer Aggrend on the forums, no new characters can be made on mega servers at this time, nor can players pay money to move existing ones there. The developer stated that free server transfers are helping but more people need to move in order to stabilize things, and that layering as they have done during previous phases of World of Warcraft is "not the solution." Aggrend did confirm that server capacity has increased since the 2008 days of the MMO, with some servers tripling in size by comparison, but that layering won't increase the capacity further and there's no way of expanding the capabilities further.

Since Blizzard started offering the free character transfers to players on mega servers, Sulfuras has seen 40,000 players from other realms and according to Aggrend, more are on the way. Although many World of Warcraft Classic fans enjoy the idea of a mega server and Blizzard didn't wish to break up friend groups or restrict "player freedom," the ultimate decision was made to encourage realm movement and restrict the overpopulated servers. While Aggrend noted that a few servers are seeing over ten thousand concurrent players during peak hours, it's currently unclear just how many people are playing, but queue times often get into the thousands even on the World of Warcraft Classic fresh start servers.

Multiple World of Warcraft Classic fans have voiced their grievances on the forums, but since the blue post from Aggrend, there's been some relief as well. Though some players noted the complexities of migrating a World of Warcraft Classic guild and friends over to another location after calling places like Faerlina and Benediction home, one fan stated that a free faction change may also sweeten the deal for hesitant Horde or Alliance.

World of Warcraft Classic is available now for Mac and PC.
