Achievements were added to World of Warcraft with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, and their popularity is one of the reasons the legacy of Arthas and the Frozen Throne is everyone's favorite addition to the land of Azeroth. There are Achievements for virtually everything, even the humble secondary professions of Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid.

In World of Warcraft, Fishing is a profession that any character can have, so the Salty title is an Achievement that's available regardless of role, class, or faction. However, be advised that the Salty title is one of the toughest ones to get, so it's helpful to have a guide to work through it.

Helpful Fishing Tips

Not all of the Achievements depend on the character's Fishing skill level, but it's always helpful to have a boost to the skill, and that's true even for those that are maxed out. The following items can be equipped or carried in the player's inventory and raise the Fishing skill.

  • Gear and Accessories. Two examples are the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, a reward for Old Man Barlow's Outland quests, or Boots of the Bay, a prize from the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby.
  • Fishing Poles. There are an amazing variety of fishing poles in the game, and there's easy to buy or find. Players who have Exalted status with the Kalu'ak can obtain the only purple fishing pole in Azeroth.
  • Various Lures. These depend on character and fishing skill level, including crafted items like Aerodynamic Fish Attractors. Nightcrawlers, which usually drop from undead enemies, are some of the best lures available until players can use the Glow Worms of Northrend.
  • Fishing Gloves. The enchant to give a +5 fishing skill to gloves was added in the Northrend expansion and thanks to the new profession of Inscription means that it's available on the Auction House if it's tough to find an Enchanter.
  • Consumables. If a player has the recipe for Captain Rumey's Lager, they can brew some up for the fishing buff. The Underbelly Elixir, which sometimes appears in the sewers of Dalaran, also has a chance to grant a fishing buff but it's chosen at random.

Helpful items and tips for each achievement vary widely, and some of them are impossible to do until a character is at a certain level or part of a special group, like a dungeon or raid party. Several items do exist that can give any character a boost when it comes to skill level, extra protection, or better mobility.

The Accomplished Angler

There are 15 meta-Achievements to complete for a character to obtain the Salty title. Some of them are easier than others, but the consensus among players is that these are some of the most difficult Achievements to get overall. This is why Salty is one of the rarer titles with a long and notorious list of Achievements.

There's also an Achievement in the retail version of World of Warcraft for the Accomplished Angler and it also rewards the Salty title, but not all the meta-Achievements are the same. There are different fish in later incarnations of the game, one of the fishing contests no longer exists, and the location or the strength of enemies in retail now scales to the player's level so exploring isn't as dangerous.
