Pumpkin carving is a long-standing Halloween tradition, and for gamers, it is an opportunity to show off their artistic skills and their repertoire of favorite characters and games. One World of Warcraft player has truly taken to the spirit of the season, creating a jack-o-lantern with a frightful prediction of Blizzard’s future.

Redditor BemusTheTyrant’s guild in World of Warcraft has historically held a contest where members would carve Warcraft-themed images into their pumpkins for the season. This year, however, most of their guild is away from the game on indefinite break, so in honor of the contest, they carved a pumpkin with a simple and poignant message regarding the state of the game: RIP Blizzard.

Since it was bought by Activision in 2008, Blizzard Entertainment's rapport with its fanbase has been unstable at best. Though Blizzard has seen moments of great success since then, the last few years have seen a large amount of strife for the company, especially in World of Warcraft. Between content delays, questionable story decisions, and the legal trouble surrounding sexual harassment and discrimination among Blizzard developers, World of Warcraft, and the company as a whole, has seen a steady decline.

Despite the grim prediction of BemusTheTyrant’s ghoulish gourd, Blizzard, it seems, is more than aware of its potential fate, especially in regards to the litigation against the company. Just today, Blizzard disclosed a letter sent to everyone at Activision Blizzard in which CEO Bobby Kotick gutted his pay as part of a promise to begin meeting the demands and expectations of his employees. If the company is able to follow through on the promises outlined therein, it might just be able to bring itself back from the grave.

Some fans of World of Warcraft are skeptical over whether Blizzard can ever reclaim the good faith of its player base. After all, just last week, Blizzard tried to pause the first lawsuit filed against it in an attempt to sweep it under the rug. Though the attempt was denied, that it was tried at all might lead gamers to believe these promises are token gestures from Kotick, whose net worth is $7 million, done only because Blizzard was caught red handed.

Regardless of Blizzard’s ultimate fate, the jack-o-lantern remains a fabulous and frightening medium through which gamers can express themselves for weal or woe. This season has already given gamers the opportunity to see homages to Dark Souls and Metroid Dread in addition to BemusTheTyrant’s macabre prophecy. There are still a few more days until Halloween, so there are still chances for the gaming community to show off their carving skills before the stockings come out.
