Following its cancelled appearance at Anime Expo, Square Enix made the surprising announcement that its cult classic Nintendo DS game The World Ends With You would be receiving an anime adaptation last week. Today, as part of Funimation's digital FunimationCon 2020, the first teaser trailer for the upcoming 2021 anime has been released, with Funimation also announcing that it is licensing the anime for an English-language release next year.

The anime will blend 2D and 3D animation with an art style true to Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi's original artwork. Animation is being handled by Shin-Ei Animation, the studio responsible for the Doraemon anime franchise, and Domerica, a 3D animation studio that previously worked on the CG animation in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Several members of the original TWEWY's development team are also assisting with the project.

The anime's official description reads as; "Neku awakens in the middle of Shibuya’s bustling Scramble Crossing with no memory of how he got there. Little does he know he’s been transported to an alternate plane of existence known as the Underground (UG). Now an unwilling participant in the mysterious “Reapers’ Game,” Neku must partner up with a girl named Shiki in order to survive. Together, they complete missions and defeat monsters known as “Noise” as they gradually uncover the true nature of this twisted Game."

The World Ends With You is one of the most fondly remembered Nintendo DS RPG titles, with many regarding it as one of the best games on the DS. The game originally released in Japan in 2007, with an English localization releasing the following year. More recently the title made its way to Nintendo Switch as The World Ends With You: Final Remix, a remaster of the original title with an added epilogue scenario. While neither versions sold as expected, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura has remained hopeful towards making a sequel to the game some day.

The World Ends With You's anime adaptation will be available to stream on FunimationNow in 2021.
