Cosplayers are able to pull off all sorts of intricate costumes that not only look cool but also actually function. From mechanical wings to light-up effects, cosplays that go above and beyond are usually shown off at conventions, on the internet, or both, and this functioning Game Boy Color cosplay is truly something to behold.

Posted to the sub-Reddit r/Gaming, Reddit user u/Jaryd_Giesen showed off his entirely functional Game Boy Color cosplay that he wore to a recent convention. The video shows off cosplayers and other convention-goers having a great time as they play the original Pokemon games on the mega-sized Game Boy.

The video also features a time-lapsed explanation of how u/Jaryd_Giesen put the costume together. Using a computer monitor, some straps, and cardboard, the Redditor was able to fasten the screen to his body while dressing it up like an oversized Game Boy Color. He estimates the entire cosplay to weigh about 13 kilograms (roughly 28 pounds) and says that it wasn't particularly comfortable to wear because as the day went on, the weight of the 24-inch monitor began to tire him out.

u/Jaryd_Giesen explained in the comments that the Pokemon game itself was running on a Pi 1b+ hooked up to a 5-volt phone battery while the monitor was powered by a 12-volt battery. The Redditor says that the battery lasted for a total of six hours of off-and-on play throughout the day of walking around the convention center.

This isn't the only case of fans of the Game Boy and Game Boy Color looking to celebrate older titles published to the platform. Rumor has it that Nintendo might be announcing that select Game Boy games might be coming to the Switch Online service. Following yesterday's Nintendo Direct, it seems like that announcement might be still a ways off, if it's even true, as the company announced select Nintendo 64 titles would be coming to the platform.

Fans are hoping that the company comes up with a way for them to play older titles as Game Boys and their games are become harder to find. Nintendo doesn't always have the best track record in terms of backward compatibility, however, the N64 announcement yesterday seems to indicate that the company is interested in bringing more titles to their current platforms. Hopefully, fans won't need to resort to waiting to play Game Boy Color games until someone wearing one as cosplay comes along.
