Wordle exploded in popularity earlier this year, prompting The New York Times to acquire the game and inspiring countless copycats. There have been plenty of clever Wordle clones produced in the months since the game blew up, including ones about geography, guessing inappropriate words, guessing eight words at once, and more. Another Wordle clone has hit the scene, and this one is all about video games.

GuessThe.Game, which can be access by clicking here, is a Wordle variation where the goal is to guess a different video game every day. Like Wordle, GuessThe.Game gives players six guesses to figure out the game for the day. However, it adapts the Wordle experience to make more sense with the challenge.

In Wordle, players are tasked with guessing five-letter words, with incorrect letters grey, correct letters in the right place marked green, and correct letters in the wrong place marked yellow. Each guess gets Wordle players closer to figuring out the correct word. GuessThe.Game is different in that it shows players a screenshot of the video game in question. They can then try their hand at guessing the game, and if they're wrong, they will get a new screenshot and a detail about the game. Please note the rest of this article will have SPOILERS for the May 26 GuessThe.Game puzzle, so proceed with caution.

guess the game puzzle

For example, the GuessThe.Game puzzle for May 26 shows a screenshot of the critically-acclaimed first-person puzzle game The Witness. If players make an incorrect guess, they are treated to a new screenshot and a detail about the game's Metacritic rating. If they guess wrong again, they are then shown yet another screenshot with another detail about the game, this time its original platforms. Another incorrect guess scores another image and the game's genre, and so on and so forth until players either guess correctly or run out of chances.

There's decent variety when it comes to the games featured in GuessThe.Game. A couple of days ago, the answer to the puzzle was the Nintendo 64 sports game Mario Golf, though first screenshot was of a non-Mario character that's featured in the game to give it some extra challenge. On May 25, the answer was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which is fitting since Activision has started ramping up marketing for the new version of Modern Warfare 2, set to launch later this year.

There are many Wordle clones out there, but few adapt the concept as well as GuessThe.Game. Video game enthusiasts who want to test their knowledge should check it out.
