Platinum Games' titles often have a devoted following, and for good reason. With some of the biggest action titles out there, each game is a study in excessive style and a new experiment with mechanics. The Wonderful 101 is no exception, and the success of its Remaster Kickstarter shows it. The Kickstarter was so successful it even led to a new side mission for Wonderful 101, the first new content for the game in years.

The Remaster was something a lot of people wanted, and they showed it through their support. No other game is quite like The Wonderful 101. The game puts the player in charge of a group of Super Sentai inspired heroes who combine to make massive tools and weapons. It's a unique, stylish, action and puzzle packed thrill ride, and players may never see its like again. At least, that's what players thought for a long time.

In a recent interview, the producer and director of The Wonderful 101 stated they would still like to make a sequel. The Kickstarter showed there is still interest in the game, so more of the same would no doubt be welcomed by fans. However, the creators are hesitant to commit to a sequel project because it would be difficult to make the game bigger and better than the original. Both producer Atsushi Inaba and director Hideki Kamiya agreed that with the first game already turned up past 11, it would be tricky to make a more expansive sequel.

There are definitely ways that a bigger sequel could work though, ways set up within The Wonderful 101 itself. The first game has the team traveling across the globe fighting alien invaders, with the final act set in space. The game hints that the team will eventually evolve and become intergalactic crusaders. The sequel could explore this, with the Wonderful team travelling to different worlds. A sequel with a success level on par with Bayonetta 2 could even spark the Scalebound revival that the Kickstarter apparently didn't accomplish.

That said, the Kickstarter actually soured some fans love for Wonderful 101 through a somewhat bizarre series of events. Several backers in the UK were hit with unexpected fees for their physical copy of the game. It was an unexpected sour note to what should have been a triumphant revival.

Platinum did issue a statement on the fees, saying it had stated in the FAQ that shipping fees would have to be accounted for by players. Still, many players felt betrayed, or at least that Platinum didn't handle the Kickstarter well. Overall the anger was divided between the Kickstarter process itself and Platinum, so as long as the Wonderful 101 sequel doesn't try to get funding through Kickstarter, there's still a decent chance of it existing.

The Wonderful 101 Remaster is available on PC, PS4, and Switch.
