For gamers who are into superhero games, there is plenty to look forward to. This includes a new title based on Wonder Woman, which should be interesting. It has yet to receive a release date, but Monolith, the developers, has a lot on its plate attempting to turn the character into a video game heroine. Although Wonder Woman is a phenomenal superhero, there are a few obstacles that must be overcome.

The main issues lie with the fact that her Lasso of Truth may not be the most exciting weapon compared to the kinds of gadgets and toys other superheroes get to play with. Furthermore, Wonder Woman’s image may need to be altered to accommodate a more progressive gaming market. While these challenges are tough, they are not impossible to overcome.

Wonder Woman Gets a Game

Wonder Woman Whom Gods Destroy

Gamers are currently enjoying somewhat of a golden age for superhero video games. It has mostly been spearheaded by Insomniac Games, which has been bringing gamers unforgettable AAA experiences like Marvel’s Spider-Man. The studio has a few more amazing superhero games in the works, including a Spider-Man sequel and a Wolverine game that has been treated with much secrecy. Additionally, gamers have gotten to enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy from Eidos-Montreal, the Batman: Arkham franchise from Rocksteady, and the Injustice series from NetherRealm Studios.

In 2021, players were pleasantly surprised when it was announced that a new Wonder Woman game is in the works. The game is being developed by Monolith, the same studio responsible for The Lord of the Rings games Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Gamers have been treated to precious few details, though it will have to be an outstanding title if it wishes to stand out in a field that is fast becoming oversaturated. As has been revealed, it will be an open-world single-player game, and it will feature an all-new story set in the DC Universe.

Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth

When gamers turn to superhero games, they are typically looking for action-packed games. Wonder Woman is certainly capable of offering that. Over the years, she has demonstrated that she is capable of amazing feats, including incredible acrobatics, superhuman strength, amazing speed, fast healing, and flight. These abilities serve her well when taking on foes of all varieties. However, a key aspect of Wonder Woman is that unlike many of her male counterparts, she does not rely solely on violence and brutality to bring about justice. Oftentimes, she uses her words and the art of dialogue and persuasion.

This is exemplified by her weapon of choice, her Lasso of Truth. It’s good for rounding up enemies, but its main purpose is to extract the truth from victims. While this is a very creative weapon, it may not necessarily translate well to a video game weapon. Wolverine has razor-sharp claws. Spider-Man has webs that allow him to swing through New York - in comparison, a rope that makes people tell the truth seems a bit underwhelming.

Wonder Woman’s Image

There is plenty to admire about Wonder Woman. She has managed to become iconic in a realm that is dominated by male superheroes, her impressive abilities have aided her in conquering monumental challenges, and she has proven herself to be equal to the likes of Superman. Nevertheless, she still has an overly sexualized image that may be outdated in the modern gaming landscape. It is somewhat impossible to divorce Wonder Woman from her sexualized image. Her creator, William Moulton Marston, was deeply interested in bondage and the role it plays in human psychology. Wonder Woman’s lasso and her signature move being to tie up men (and sometimes women) is no coincidence.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with BDSM, it could be argued that, if not handled correctly, Wonder Woman could be a regressive step in an industry that is just beginning to embrace female characters that are acknowledged for more than just sex appeal. A Wonder Woman game has potential, and with Monolith, it is in good hands. There is also a plethora of source material to draw from. It is quite an important game, as it shines the spotlight on a character who has deserved it for a while, but it does have to be approached with care.

Wonder Woman is currently in development.
