When it comes to comic book movies, a surefire way to bring out one's inner geek is to include superhero cameos. There's a particular kind of thrill that comes from seeing one's favorite characters join forces against an existential threat, especially when it occurs after a formulaic build-up of solo films and backstories. Marvel is clearly aware of this — its movies are well known for their epic team battles, and the studio is working hard to bring more of them to the big screen, especially after having successfully secured a number of Fox properties like X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four.

But how will DC keep up? Given the complexity of Marvel's Phase 4, which is currently developing its intricate multiverse, DC will need much more than just its Justice League to stay competitive at the box office. That said, based on some recent updates of the studio's latest projects, things are looking promising for DC's newest era. In fact, many fans have been engaged in a discussion regarding what DC has in store for them, and a theory about the next Wonder Woman 3 film, in particular, has been at the forefront.

While there is no news on a release date or what the third movie could be about, a recent DC FanDome event has raised some new speculation regarding Lynda Carter's possible involvement. The veteran actress, who portrayed Diana Prince in the original TV iteration of Wonder Woman, was present alongside director Patty Jenkins during the panel interview, sparking the rumor that she could have a bigger role in the threequel. What makes the theory even more plausible is the fact that Carter made a cameo appearance in the post-credit scene of Wonder Woman: 1984 — there, she was introduced not as Diana Prince, but as the legendary Amazonian warrior Asteria.

So far, what is known about Wonder Woman 3 is that Gal Gadot's Diana Prince will likely be more involved in present affairs, with a much lesser emphasis on her past. There is also a wide-open window of opportunity for Gadot and Carter's characters to link up in the next film, given that The Flash movie is seemingly working on a huge timey-wimey plot (with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck both set to reprise their respective Batman roles). With time travel and alternate realities being all the rage right now, it makes sense for DC to take the Wonder Woman franchise in that same direction.

For now, all of this remains speculation as Jenkins, Gadot, or Carter have been extremely tight-lipped about the upcoming project. Still, Jenkins has assured that the third film has been green-lighted, despite previous rumors that the studio would drop the franchise after two entries.
