Insomniac Games hit the ground running in the Marvel universe with 2018's Spider-Man, offering its take on the wall-crawler and his battles to protect New York City. Players have been waiting with bated breath since, wanting to know if Insomniac will stick with Spider-Man or possibly explore other corners of the Marvel universe. It is now known Insomniac will be doing the latter and will take up the adamantium claws of one of Marvel's most famous X-Men.

Marvel's Wolverine was announced as part of the PlayStation Showcase livestream on September 9 and is one of two new Marvel games coming from Insomniac. The CGI announcement trailer was short, showing a bar in disarray and several patrons scattered about following a possible fight. One patron is seen sitting at the bar, confirmed to be Wolverine after unsheathing his adamantium claws when another patron picks themself back up and takes out a knife.

Aside from the announcement, Insomniac did not share any story details or possible release window for its next Marvel game.

Wolverine, also known as Logan, is among the most famous and popular members of the X-Men, serving as a regular member of the team since 1975. Born James Howlett, the Canadian mutant is considered one of the most dangerous characters in Marvel Comics, often walking a fine-line between hero and anti-hero. He has been featured in comics, cartoons, and most famously on film where he was portrayed by Hugh Jackman for roughly 17 years.

The PlayStation Showcase proved to be a big show for Insomniac, confirming two major Marvel games in the works from the studio. Alongside Wolverine, Spider-Man 2 was also confirmed to be on the way and set for a 2023 release. The trailer for Spider-Man 2 confirmed Venom and appeared to tease Kraven the Hunter as the next major adversaries for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

PlayStation handing a second major Marvel title to Insomniac can be read as a clear vote of confidence in the studio's handling of the comic book properties. Even before PlayStation acquired the studio in 2019, Insomniac had a long history of delivering popular PlayStation exclusives since the original Spyro the Dragon released in 1998. The Ratchet and Clank games are the best examples of Insomniac's success on PlayStation, as the series continues to be a mainstay on the console family, the most recent being 2021's Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.

Marvel's Wolverine is set to release on PS5, but no release date has been confirmed.
