At E3 2018, Bethesda officially announced Wolfenstein: Youngblood, a spinoff of the rebooted Wolfenstein franchise starring BJ Blazkowicz's twin daughters Jess and Soph. The big selling point that helps this Wolfenstein stand apart from the others is the ability to play co-op through the campaign, and so some may be wondering if it will support split-screen.

Unfortunately for those hoping to play through Wolfenstein: Youngblood in split-screen with a friend, it's been confirmed that the game will not have split-screen support. This is according to senior gameplay designer Andreas Ojerfos, who spoke about the lack of split-screen in the game to Metro and explained why Wolfenstein: Youngblood does not have split-screen.

According to Ojerfos, it would have been "great" to include split-screen in Wolfenstein: Youngblood and that many of the developers at MachineGames would've liked to see it implemented. However, the team is more concerned with maintaining 60 frames per second, which is something that would have had to have been sacrificed in Wolfenstein: Youngblood to add split-screen. "It's really difficult to make split-screen because you render the game twice and it affects how you do your art assets. So we would have loved to do it but there's a big reason why you almost never see it. It's very difficult to do nowadays," he further explained.

does wolfenstein youngblood have split screen

The lack of split-screen in Wolfenstein: Youngblood won't matter to some fans, but others will no doubt be disappointed. The game has also caused some controversy for its confusing use of microtransactions, which were once suggested to offer gameplay advantages, only for MachineGames to come out and say that wasn't the case.

Additionally, there were some that weren't happy to find out that the physical version of Wolfenstein: Youngblood on the Nintendo Switch isn't really a physical version at all. Those who decide to buy the Switch version won't find a cartridge in the box, but rather, a download code for the game.

While Wolfenstein: Youngblood has had some missteps leading up to its release, if the core gameplay is strong enough, fans should be able to look past these issues. We'll find out if the game lives up to the legacy of its predecessors when it launches in late July.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood launches July 26 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. A Google Stadia version is also in development.
