It's no secret that Bethesda Softworks has always pushed to create immersive, high quality single-player experiences. Among those experiences is the revival of the classic FPS Wolfenstein in recent years, headed by developer Machine Games. With the release of The New Colossus in October last year, Bethesda has voiced its thoughts and plans for the franchise's future.

In a recent interview with Metro , Bethesda VP Pete Hines confirmed there will in fact be a third mainline Wolfenstein title coming sometime in the future. There was some worry following the release of Wolfenstein 2 last holiday season, as its relatively quick price drop was thought to be caused by poor sales of the game.

Here's what Hines had to say when asked about the potential for a Wolfenstein 3:

"Yeah, sure. Absolutely we're making a Wolfenstein 3. They said on stage that they're taking a break from the larger story to do this thing. But we all have to see how that ends."

The break Hines is referring to is a brand new Wolfenstein spin-off story, titled Wolfenstein Youngblood. Youngblood is a cooperative shooter set in an alternate history 1980s, with protagonist BJ Blazkowicz's twin daughters featured as playable characters. The game is expected to launch sometime in 2019.

One reason for Wolfenstein 2's possible lack of sales could have been the release date. By releasing on the same day as both Assassin's Creed Origins and Super Mario Odyssey, there was no opportunity for The New Colossus to receive the attention Bethesda probably thought it deserved. Wolfenstein 2 marked the third game released in the franchise reboot, with Wolfenstein: The New Order and its prequel story Wolfenstein: The Old Blood launching in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

The new Wolfenstein aside, recent history has had many fans worried about the future of Bethesda's desire for single-player gaming. Following its #SavePlayerOne campaign during the 2017 Game Awards, we've seen the announcement of Arkane Studios' Dishonored franchise being put on hiatus, and Fallout 76 pulling away from the traditional single-player approach to take an online survival-RPG approach instead.

All things considered, the confirmation of yet another sequel in the Wolfenstein franchise should be welcomed with open arms by fans of Bethesda's single-player games. And with the confirmation of DOOM Eternal and RAGE 2 as well, solo gamers still have a few bright spots to look forward to in the company's upcoming lineup of new games.

Wolfenstein 3 has yet to receive an official release date.
