There is finally a bit of good news for fans of Telltale Games‘ newest episodic series, The Wolf Among Us, which launched its first episode to critical acclaim back in October. Since then, players have been left with jaws dropped for the second episode, but without any explanation for its absence coming from the developer.
Now Telltale has broken the silence, but is still keeping the exact reason for the delay to themselves. The good news is that Episode 2, titled “Smoke & Mirrors” will be arriving in the first week of February, and the team expects future chapters to be released without similar delays.
As fan concerns grew – understandable, since the series’ first episode ended with a cliffhanger now three months old – Telltale president and co-founder Kevin Bruner took to the company’s official forum to confirm that the wait was nearly over:
It’s been a struggle to get this episode out, for a variety of reasons, but it’s finally ready to go, and you heard it here first!
Ep 2 should be available the first week of February. We are working hard with all of our partners (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Apple) to coordinate everything, but we’re confident enough to announce that here. The episode is looking really good (as is the rest of the season!). We are very concerned about the long delay for this episode, but this is one of those occasions where several things conspired against us (not to mention the additional delays due to the holidays). I won’t dive into the details, but it’s been an unusual and specific set of circumstances and we do not anticipate it happening again as we go forward with the rest of the season.
So there you have it. First week of February!
Now those fans of the adventure game studio who aren’t already dreading/incredibly hungry for the next episode of The Walking Dead Season 2, or anticipating more details on their upcoming Game of Thrones and Borderlands titles, can mark their calendars.
Given that it followed on the heels of the critically acclaimed The Walking Dead, the manner in which The Wolf Among Us has begun to chart quite a different course is truly surprising (read our review). While the first episode was responsible for establishing the fiction to those unfamiliar with writer Bill Willingham’s graphic novel, and has yet to truly explore the ramifications of choice and consequence on its hero, Bigby Wolf is already one of our favorite characters of 2013. And with “Smoke and Mirrors,” even more will be added to the mix.
The screenshot above shows that Bigby’s path will cross that of ‘Jack of Fables,’ the notorious trickster and magic-bean-peddler, but he won’t be alone. The events of Episode One hinted that future investigations would lead Bigby to ‘Georgie’ – of the nursery rhyme “Georgie Porgie,” re-imagined here, like many other “Fables” characters, as an unsavoury figure. The teased footage of Episode Two confirms that in Telltale’s mature, pull-no-punches fiction, Georgie’s penchant for girl-kissing has him acting as a pimp, and proprietor of his own gentleman’s club, ‘Pudding and Pie.’
Like Telltale, we can only hope that these kind of delays are a rare occurrence, especially if they plan to leave players hanging from episode to episode as much as their premiere chapter implies. Hopefully, more assets, details and trailers will be made available as the release approaches.
