Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has been released and is giving players a fantastic Souls-like experience with a unique combat system. While the divine beasts and martial arts are fun aspects that have been much praised, another important aspect is the different types of phase spells in the game.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty focuses on these spells as important aspects in certain situations. With wood phase spells, there are fourteen spells, and much of the focus across them is on lightning damage and growing player HP. Players should try to remember that wood phase spells are effective in the face of Earth spells but are weak against metal ones in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty combat.

7 Absorb Vitality (Wood Phase Level 3)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Absorb Vitality

Absorb Vitality is a particularly useful spell for players new to Souls-Like games and playing Wo Long for the first time. This goes double if the player is still in the early part of the game, and getting used to the style of combat. Absorb Vitality is a useful spell that allows players to regain HP as they deal damage to enemies around them.

This makes it less necessary to get blocking as quickly as early in the game. It is a massive help allowing players to progress while they gain the skills necessary to defeat higher-level enemies who deal more damage later in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

6 Spirit Fervor (Wood Phase Level 6)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Spirit Fervor

Spirit Fervor works similarly to Absorb Vitality. Instead of helping the player to regain HP though, Spirit Fervor allows players to gain a more positive spirit while attacking enemies. It also works when allies of the player attack enemies, helping the whole party. This sort of attack is one of the things that Wo Long does best.

This spell is obviously at its best when the player has allies, but either way, it can be very useful. Gaining a positive spirit quickly will make it easier to get to the spirit attacks needed to break down the guards of enemies faster. Without this spell, a lot of battles will be prolonged and players will have to be better at dodging in order to survive.

5 Guard Formation (Wood Phase Level 10)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Guard Formation

Wood spells like enhanced defense can be important parts of a player's arsenal early in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. However, as the game goes on, players will find spells to replace some of their early ones. Guard Formation is definitely an upgraded version of enhanced defense.

This spell gives an AOE effect which casts a ring of an area where the player and any of their allies will take reduced damage from enemies. Guard formation is hugely useful, particularly if players are caught against a large group of enemies advancing upon them. It is also important with spells like this to check the morale level required for use.

4 Unstoppable Force (Wood Phase Level 2)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Wood Spells

Unstoppable Force is one of the most powerful early-game spells for players as they get used to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Acquired at wood phase level 2, this spell allows players to get automatic recovery when the player’s spirit is low. This is an absolutely necessary early-game spell for players.

The other use of the spell is that when players have high spirits, the spell will reduce the cost of anything using it. This means that at all times, a player’s spirit will be saved a great deal which will be a massively important part of combat throughout Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for players.

3 Focus Zone (Wood Phase Level 20)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Focus Zone

Focus Zone is the opposite of Guard Formation. While it takes quite a while to get to wood phase level 20 in order to unlock this spell, it is definitely worth it. Focus Zone creates a similar area of effect where players gain a buff, but instead of reduced damage from enemies, the buff is increased damage against enemies. The various buffs are one of the things that Wo Long has been praised for doing a little differently from similar games.

This is the best way to get a further upgrade from Guard Formation, and players should utilize one of these two spells frequently in any wood-focused build. Being able to stay in a focused area in a fight and gain a huge bonus for increased damage is one of the most useful spells a player can get.

2 Lightning Weapon (Wood Phase Level 12)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Lightning Weapon

Lightning Weapon is a hugely important spell that players can get still reasonably early in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. This spell is the best way to start and to continue dealing lightning damage on enemies. Through various upgrades which can be attained over the course of the game, players can keep this spell hugely relevant to their gameplay, and doling out the right status effects can help hugely.

Upgrades that increase the length that the lightning damage is applied to the player’s weapon or ones which increase the extra amount of lightning damage done by it can help make this spell a useful one even for late-game usage.

1 Heaven’s Rage (Wood Phase Level 25)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Heaven's Rage

Heaven’s Rage is a devastating late-game wood spell that players will want to use as soon as they can get it. Despite having a huge spirit consumption and high-level requirements, Heaven’s Rage is worth it all. This spell devastates enemies in front of the player with hugely damaging lightning bolts.

Besides a well-powered lightning weapon, nothing will come close to doing this level of lightning damage to opponents. Players will definitely want to get this spell for some of the game’s closing stages, as it can be a huge help against single enemies or several at once. This sort of devastating power has drawn comparisons between Wo Long and Elden Ring.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was released on March 3rd, 2023, and is available on Playstation 4&5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
