Coming out of the blue as just one of many exciting reveals at The Game Awards 2017, a new announcement confirms that the creators behind The Vanishing of Ethan CarterPainkiller, and Bulletstorm are working together once again in order to create an intriguing new shooter by the name of Witchfire. Although we don't have much information on the upcoming title, the awards ceremony did unveil the game's first official trailer in front of a worldwide audience.

Described by developer The Astronauts as a dark fantasy shooter, the trailer shows the game's protagonist going to-to-toe with some fearsome creatures that look to have been pulled straight out of a nightmare. What's particular drawing about Witchfire is that the beautiful title has clearly taken inspiration from The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and the atmosphere of the game is truly something to behold, both in and out of combat sequences.

With the team behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm responsible for the project's development, the gun play in Witchfire is already expected to be on top form and the trailer suggest that the protagonist will be wielding a range of powerful and stylish weaponry in their battle against the dark forces. It looks like guns won't be the only way of fighting back against the terrifying enemies, however, as shown by one short scene that highlights the player's special abilities.

In addition to their old-fashioned firearms, players will rely on an array of powers including lightning fast movement and a telekinetic ability in order to interact with the environment and make short work of their foes. Although The Astronauts' team is keeping relatively quiet on the topic of its latest game so far, we expect big things to come from Witchfire as the title progresses further into its development cycle.

The latest project from The Astronauts currently has no scheduled release date, leading many interested gamers online to speculate on just when we might get to try out the upcoming shooter for ourselves. In addition, the developer has not yet revealed what platforms the game is in production for, suggesting that Witchfire still has a long way to go before even these basic details can be confirmed.
