Following a much anticipated second season, which premiered in December 2021 after several COVID-related delays, Netflix's The Witcher is currently filming its third season. While plot details remain unclear, a leaked set photo may hint at what viewers can expect from Geralt of Rivia's next journey.

With eight books and three video games, the writers and producers of The Witcher have multiple storylines available for adaptation. So far, the show has done an excellent job at introducing new plotlines and crafting an original narrative while including elements (and fan-favorite monsters like the leshen) from the source material. Still, the newly-released set photo suggests that an important plot point from the books will be included in The Witcher season 3.

The image, uploaded by Redanian Intelligence, seemingly shows Geralt (played by Henry Cavill) engaging in combat with Vilgefortz of Roggeveen (Mahesh Jadu). The battle belongs to the second book in the Witcher saga, Time of Contempt. In the book, the mage tries to get Geralt to join his side in the conflict between the Nilfgardiaan army and the Northern Kingdom. However, like all witchers are expected to, our hero remains neutral. A fight soon ensues between the two, and Geralt is severely wounded.

The wounds from the battle left Geralt suffering from chronic pain, which affects his ability to do many of the things he once was able to do. These long-lasting effects are mentioned multiple times in the books, as they're crucial to Geralt's character. While the games never addressed his chronic pain, the Netflix adaptation will likely touch on that.

Season 3 of The Witcher will also introduce a new set of characters, including Shang-Chi breakout star Meng'er Zhang. The actress will take on the role of Milva, a human adopted by the dryads of Brokilon Forest. Joining Zhang is Robbie Amell as Gallatin, the leader of the guerrilla army Scoia'tael, and Christelle Elwin as Mistle, a gang member who steals from the rich. Rounding out the cast is Hugh Skinner as Prince Radovid, the royal playboy and King Vizimir's younger brother.

Since its release, the show has garnered praise for its diverse cast and for adding depth to its character. Featuring new actors and exploring the physical and psychological consequences of Geralt's condition makes season 3 look very promising. Unfortunately, viewers have no choice but to contain their excitement for the time being, as an official The Witcher season 3 release date remains out of sight.

The Witcher seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.
