Season 1 of The Witcher introduced new fans to the world of The Continent while building on what the books and games already did. Due to the sometimes confusing timeline, fans met Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Cirilla, also known as Ciri, of Cintra (Freya Allan) at the same time. Though Geralt is the titular Witcher, Yennefer and Ciri are equally important characters, and The Witcher Season 2 will likely expand on both their characters' journeys. Ciri especially seems poised to grow and improve now that she's finally met Geralt. For those who haven't seen The Witcher in a while, Ciri is left alone when her kingdom of Cintra is taken over by Nilfgaard. All she knows is what her grandmother told her: that she has to find Geralt of Rivia. He is supposedly her destiny, though Ciri doesn't know why.
All Ciri knows is that Geralt is her best chance at survival. That's a lot to put on a young girl, especially one who lived quite an idyllic and pampered life before that. However, Ciri learns quickly enough that the life she led is not the only kind of life. She begins to become tougher throughout season 1 of The Witcher. Season 2 will likely build on what was developed in the first season for Ciri and Yennefer as well. The two characters may even eventually meet, which would be interesting to see for many fans. Ciri, now that she has completed the mission her grandmother gave her, must be feeling a bit lost. She must be unsure of where to go from here. Luckily, she has Geralt to help her. Though she might need more help in the end.
However, Geralt and Ciri's relationship will have its growing pains. In an interview with TV Guide, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich discusses the second season, including Geralt and Ciri's relationship. She reveals that Geralt and Ciri are "not really embracing [the fact that they're each other's destiny], but accepting that this is what they need to do to continue walking through The Continent." So it seems that Geralt and Ciri finally meeting is going to be a difficult thing for both characters. It makes sense, in a way. As Hisssrich herself states, the two of them meet and think, "Oh, I don't know you at all. You are a stranger." Having to deal with a stranger being one's destiny would be difficult for anyone. And especially for Geralt, who is not used to dealing with anyone for too long. Ciri herself has learned to be alone a bit better since the fall of Cintra.
And the two of them being strangers won't be all Ciri has to deal with in The Witcher Season 2. The world of The Continent is a difficult one, and Ciri will need all her wits and strength to survive it. Luckily, her story throughout season 1 of The Witcher is all about building that strength. According to Hissrich, there is a point where Ciri decides "she's not going to run anymore." This occurs in episode 7.
Hissrich describes Ciri's new perspective as " lovely stubbornness and grit." Of course, Ciri's perspective might cause clashes with Geralt if he tries to protect her too much or give her instructions. Overall, it seems that Ciri will be growing in power throughout The Witcher Season 2. Though according to Hissrich, Ciri will not be forgetting her roots. She will grow and change, but it won't be too sudden.
All of that sounds good and will be a treat for many fans. The Witcher Season 2 will possibly be even better than the first season. Including Ciri's character development. It seems that fans will get to watch Ciri grow into a strong and powerful character. And that's always nice. At the same time, the development will feel natural and not rushed. Ciri and Geralt's relationship will also hopefully follow a similar pattern. Fans will get to watch the two characters grow closer in an organic way. They will start as strangers and slowly build up a bond. Just as Ciri started out as a pampered girl and will grow into a strong woman. It seems that Ciri will be an even more interesting character by the end of season 2 of The Witcher.
Of course, not every fan looking forward to The Witcher Season 2 will be intrigued by Ciri's character development. Or her familial relationship with Geralt developing naturally. Some fans are more intrigued by action in their fantasy and that's fine. Everyone has different tastes. Yet many fans will probably enjoy seeing Ciri's growth, and the growth of her relationship with Geralt. And none of this growth would be possible without Ciri's journey during season 1 of The Witcher or Geralt's.
Season 2 can now expand upon those journeys and it is all the better for it. Hopefully, fans will enjoy the ride that the show is offering. It's hard to fully predict, of course, but based on what is known it sounds good. Fans seem to be lucky with The Witcher. It seems to keep getting better and better.
