The highly-anticipated second season of The Witcher is expected to arrive on Netflix later this year and fans have just been offered the first official look at it. The streaming service released a teaser for season 2 of the live-action adaptation of the popular game series during its Geeked Week event on Friday, which shows Ciri as a Witcher in training.

Fans already know that season 2 of The Witcher picks up after the events of the previous one and will see Geralt of Rivia taking Princess Cirilla, or Ciri, to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen in order to keep her safe. Henry Cavill and Freya Allan will reprise their respective roles, and if the teaser is anything to go by, Allan’s Ciri will be learning how to fight and wield swords.

The season 2 teaser has left fans of the franchise excited, especially since it has taken so long to get an official look at the second season of The Witcher, which took over a year to film. The Witcher was one of the first television series to be affected by the ongoing pandemic. The shooting had just commenced in the UK in March 2020, when the first set of lockdowns were announced. Additionally, in November, several members of the crew tested positive for COVID-19 and lead actor Henry Cavill sustained an injury in December, further delaying the project. While the teaser is a series of clips from the upcoming season, it definitely packs a punch.

Having finally been able to complete filming in April, the streaming service couldn’t wait to reintroduce one of the main characters. However, one thing that many fans have pointed out, and were frankly upset about, is that Geralt does not make an appearance in the teaser. Of course the aim was to keep it Ciri-centric, but Geralt of Rivia is the main character after all and fans deserve to see how far he has come in his journey. It could also do with the fact that he is wonderfully portrayed by Cavill, who has a massive fan following. Apart from Cavill and Allan, Anya Chalotra will also return as the sorceress Yennefer and Joey Batey comes back as fan-favorite Jaskier.

Another big announcement related to the project was also made by Netflix and CD Projekt Red, publishers of The Witcher game series. After teasing fans with a mysterious Witcher event on July 9 on Twitter, it was finally confirmed in Geeked Week that the two companies will be coming together for the first-ever WitcherCon. The event, which will be accessible on both Twitch and YouTube, will feature talents from both the games and the television series. Game developers and cast and crew of the Netflix series may be making an appearance at different panels, and more announcements regarding the future of the franchise are expected.

The Witcher season 2 is expected to premiere on Netflix later in 2021.
