To fans of The Witcher series, Ciri is known to be a feisty witcher girl with ashen hair, emerald eyes and a pale complexion. With Ciri being the adoptive daughter of Geralt and the true daughter of Emperor Emhyr var Emereis, it is fair to say that she plays a significant role in the series – if not the most important. A recent cast listing suggests that Netflix's The Witcher series may be looking to change her appearance for the show.

A listing recently posted on the National Youth Theatre (a British youth-focused acting site) suggests that casting officials for the web-series are searching for a BAME actress around the ages of 15 and 16. BAME is a British term which stands for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic.

The listing for Ciri further goes on to describe the character as a brazen, resilient and relentless girl, who can be found “rough-housing with Palace hands” rather than “sitting at the finery at the knee of Queen Calanthe” despite being a princess. Although it is currently unclear as to whether this listing has been posted by officials working on the upcoming television series, it is safe to assume that with filming due to being in the next month, the role is sure to be filled soon.

Earlier this week, it was already announced that Superman actor Henry Cavill would be taking on the role of Geralt. As with all video game-related film and television adaptations, this decision was met with somewhat of a mixed reception with some praising the decision and others deriding it. Currently, fans of The Witcher series are reacting to the potential of Ciri being cast as a BAME actress in a rather negative manner, with many pointing out that Lauren S. Hissrich – the creator of the show – had previously stated that she would not be changing the backstories of major characters at random.

If one can remember, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt previously came under fire for lacking racial diversity, and some fans believe producers may be attempting to avoid this with the television series by casting one of the major characters as an actress from a minority background. Whatever happens and whoever is cast, hopefully, the television series turns out to be a good show and not another disappointing adaption of a cherished video game series.
