The world created by Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher novels has grown into an increasingly more popular fantasy property over the years, now especially thanks to Netflix's adaptation starring Henry Cavill. While the second season of The Witcher is set to relaunch production in August, fans can always go back to CD Projekt Red's acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for more adventures with Geralt of Rivia — perhaps using a mod to radically change the game by giving him access to firearms.

A modder by the name of Roenaxx uploaded a gun mod for The Witcher 3 on the Nexus Mods forum, adding 10 guns and seven types of ammunition as an alternative to crossbows that offers a more damaging ranged combat style with built-in limitations. For those who are worried that modern-day tools of war might break the game, Roenaxx's firearms mod is limited to more realistic flintlock pistols that range from small firearms to hand-cannons, and there are two "fancy" exotic weapons with additional stats to collect.

The mod also only comes into effect after players have reached level 10, at which point they can unlock diagrams for different weapons to use in blacksmith shops as well as the ability to craft standard, high-grade, and infused ammunition from lead, silver, alloy, and dimeritium bullets. Unlike mods that apply simple visual overhauls, the addition of complex firearms seems like it should add a sizable amount of content for interested players.

According to Roenaxx, the mod is available in The Witcher 3's New Game+ and compatible with Ghost Mode, and it "should be compatible with most mods." There is more content and bug fixes planned for the mod, though Roenaxx says they will not be taking any requests for further additions. They are, however, accepting donations for anyone who wishes to support their work.

Some of the modder's previous projects uploaded to Nexus Mods include an "exotic arsenal" mod that adds 55 unique bladed weapons into The Witcher 3, as well as a mod that gives Geralt goggles. Similar impressive fan additions can be found in other open-world titles, such as a recent Breath of the Wild mod that adds Samus Aran.

The rich modding scene for CD Projekt Red's title is just one indication of the series' success, as is its soon-to-be two-season Netflix adaptation. Witcher content can also be found in other games, including outfit design codes for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
