It's usually understood that fantasy games don't take place in the same reality as real life, but that doesn't stop developers from putting small references to pop culture within their games. These Easter eggs are usually good natured, but sometimes they can really change the mood of a game. That is the case with this Easter egg discovered in The Witcher 3, which references one of the creepiest monsters in the history of Doctor Who, the Weeping Angels. The implementation of this is very subtle, but it does wonders to scare players that know about it.

The Witcher 3 is filled to the brim with Easter eggs like this, but a lot of players seemed to have missed this one entirely. Without prior knowledge of Doctor Who, it's easy to write this off as just an oddity or even potentially a bug, but players that are familiar with the Weeping Angels were much more off put by the discovery.

Redditor friendlyjimaz posted the find on the subreddit for The Witcher 3, and it has since garnered quite a bit of attention. At the start of the video, Geralt can be seen heading towards a church with two statues on either side of the door. After entering the church and exiting, the statues are suddenly in a different spot. Not only have they moved from their initial spot, but they are also ominously facing Geralt. This is a direct reference to the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who.

The Weeping Angels were first introduced in "Blink," the tenth episode of season 3, and they made a serious impact on the Doctor Who community. These murderous creatures had the unique ability to freeze themselves in time whenever they were being observed, but if their prey were to look away or blink, they could close the distance with blinding speed. In order to avoid looking at each other and locking both angels in place, they cover their eyes with their hands, thus giving them the appearance that they are weeping.

Naturally, looking away from these Weeping Angels doesn't seem to do anything in The Witcher 3 after the first time, but it is still a terrifying moment for fans that are familiar with these creatures. Many players report being terrified to look away from them after the first time the angels moved, trying to get as far away as possible while keeping the camera trained on them. Players wanting to find this Easter egg for themselves can check the cemetery near Lindenvale to find the Weeping Angels.

The Witcher 3 is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
