Cyberpunk 2077’s tumultuous launch has been followed by a string of bad news. While the game has been improved since its launch, it’s still plagued with bugs ranging from nuisances to game-breakers. However, CD Projekt Red is doing something a bit unexpected to help address the issue. The developer is bringing on a team of The Witcher 3 modders to help fix the issues dragging Cyberpunk 2077 down.

CD Projekt Red has hired developers from WolvenKit and Redscript, popular modding tools for The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, respectively, to work on official mod support and to squash some of the game’s bugs. Details on the hirings are a bit scarce, the announcement simply being made by a Discord message from the team. It’s a good sign for Cyberpunk 2077’s future, though there’s a long road ahead.

Perhaps the most significant part of the announcement is that the team is working on Cyberpunk 2077’s official mod support. So far, the game’s support for community content has been fairly limited, and seeing it expanded could have a huge effect on Cyberpunk 2077’s future. For example, if mod support was expanded to the same degree as The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim’s mod support, fans could see the game’s lifespan extended by a decade.

Of course, there’s other work that needs to be done to Cyberpunk 2077 before fans can really dive into adding new content, something that the community may well oblige. Bluntly, Cyberpunk 2077’s fanbase may become essential to fixing the game if CD Projekt Red fails to do so. While it will likely never be what fans were expecting, mods like the Unofficial Skyrim Patch have proven just how much a community can do to fix a game.

Plus, having a team of talented community developers join CD Projekt Red in a more official capacity could be exactly the breath of life that Cyberpunk 2077 so desperately needs. While it’s too early to say that things will turn around completely, it indicates that CD Projekt is still committed to making the game better, and that’s precisely what the community needs to hear.

For now, though, fans will have to wait and see what the next few months hold. When improved modding tools are released, there’s a good chance that the community will start to implement a healthy suite of changes. With that being the case, fans may get at least some of what they were hoping Cyberpunk 2077 would be.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
