The Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone Expansion May Feature the Return of an Old Friend

Part of a gamer’s joy when playing any sequel is being reunited with favorite characters from prior games in the series. Unfortunately, just because a character survives through a game doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll make an appearance in its sequel, and fans are sometimes left pining.

Given the nature of The Witcher series, it’s understandable that not all characters from The Witcher and The Witcher 2 could possibly appear in the third game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, fans of one particular medic may be pleased to know that she may soon be returning to the franchise.

A new promotional image for the upcoming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansions may hint that Shani, who originally appeared in the first The Witcher, may be making an appearance. The small image displays two pieces of art associated with the expansions Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone, the latter of which a familiar-looking red-head appears in. While the image only really shows a female face and some short tendrils of red hair, she bears a fairly strong resemblance to Shani. Additionally, CD Projekt Red previously noted that the upcoming expansions would include additional characters, both “new and dearly missed.”

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Hearts of Stone Shani Teaser

If the image is indeed of Shani, this would be her first appearance since The Witcher. However, her influence hasn’t been completely absent in the more recent entries to the series. Her character was referenced in a journal log in The Witcher 2, and during the Carnal Sins mission in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, another doctor makes mention of her. If Shani does indeed appear in the Hearts of Stone expansion, it remains to be seen if Geralt’s choices about whether to leave Alvin with her or with Triss Merigold will influence her story in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

It’s always nice to see old favorite characters return to a series, so hopefully, CD Projekt Red isn’t simply teasing its fans with a lookalike character. Even if Shani doesn’t make an appearance, their promise for dearly missed characters to return should at least mean some pleasant surprises are ahead for long-time fans of the series.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Hearts of Stone will be released sometime in October of 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
