There are plenty of swords that Geralt can use to dispatch his enemies in The Witcher 3. Some are excellent at their job, while others leave players wanting more. However, there are some swords that are truly the stuff of legends, such as Aerondight. Aerondight makes an appearance in all three Witcher games.

In Witcher 3, Aerondight can be found in the Blood and Wine DLC and is the single most powerful sword in the game. While most swords are quite easy to acquire in the game, The Witcher 3's Aerondight requires players to go through a mini-quest. They must make certain choices through the game to qualify for acquiring Aerondight.

Updated on February 2nd, 2022 by Talha Bin Rizwan: The Aerondight silver sword has made a consistent appearance throughout all 3 Witcher games. Geralt receives it from the Lady of the Lake in the first game but loses it in the prologue of the second. However, the sword can be found again in The Witcher 3, during the Blood and Wine DLC. In order to wield the legendary sword once more, Geralt will need to complete a short quest during which he has to show certain qualities and virtues. If players have been playing their game a certain way, then they would have already fulfilled the requirements for the quest and will be able to get the sword. However, in the event they have not, players can easily demonstrate these qualities during the various quests and interactions in the game.

Acquiring The Quest

Location to start Aerondight Quest

To get Aerondight in Witcher 3, players need to complete the quest called 'There Can Be Only One'. Players can acquire the quest from any notice board in Beauclair. Or, players can skip the notice board and go straight to the location at lake Lac Celavy. To get to the lake, players will need to head due East from Corvo Bianco. Once at the lake, they will find a little island in the middle of the lake and find a hermit who lives there. He will tell the players about a sword and in order to get it, they need to have the five chivalric virtues.

Players need to demonstrate valor, honor, wisdom, compassion, and generosity. If players have already completed a number of side quests in Toussaint, then chances are they have already shown they possess these virtues. The game keeps track of them regardless of the fact if players acquired the quest or not.

Valor

Geralt face to face against champions in tourney quest

Players will only need to show they possess each virtue only once to get The Witcher 3's Aerondight. There are several opportunities to show these virtues, for example, the side-quest 'The Warble of a Smitten Knight'. Completing and winning the tournament being held in the quest satisfies the requirement for the virtue 'Valor'. Players will need to make the choice to continue participating in the tournament half-way through the quest. Alternatively, players can complete Witcher contracts with challenging enemies or even a random encounter will do against a huge beast or a particularly difficult enemy type.

Alternate Way To Prove Valor

An alternate way to prove Geralt’s valor is by completing the “Fists of Fury: Toussaint” side-questline. Geralt will need to defeat the first three opponents, then follow the “Raging Wolf” quest to beat Maestro. Doing so will complete the requirement for the task. Chances are that players would have already completed the requirement in earlier quests throughout the game. However, it is better to complete the requirement separately here as well to be sure.

Honor

Vivienne Shows Her Cursed Self to Geralt

Players will have plenty of opportunities to show their honor throughout the game. The only thing to keep in mind is to make choices that will be deemed 'honorable'. For example, players will have a few chances to do so in the quest 'The Warble of a Smitten Knight'. First, they need to register in the tournament with the name Geralt. Then, someone will challenge them to a mounted duel; by defeating him, players can prove their honor.

And lastly, when players learn of Vivienne's secret, they must never tell anyone what it is, and it will count towards possessing the virtue. It will take till the end of the quest for this to be credited in the players' favor.

Alternate Option To Show Honor

Another way to complete the ‘Honor’ requirement is by completing the “Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite!” side quest. Geralt can start this quest by visiting a Notice Board in Beauclair or by speaking to the man who would be shouting about an art exhibition being closed in the city. Players will need to find the missing sculptures and return them to the man. In doing so, the ‘Honor’ requirement will be completed.

Wisdom

Conversation with the Spotted Wight in attempts to cure it

Though there are many instances players can show their 'Wisdom', the easiest perhaps is during the main quest 'La Cage au Fou'. To do this, players will simply need to lift the Spotted Wight's curse and choose not to attack it. They will need to make sure to eat the meal without using spoons. Afterward, they will need to follow the scent to the wight who will now be transformed back to a woman. Not only will players show their wisdom, but they will also complete the quest in a non-violent way. Lifting curses, avoiding confrontations, and winning local Gwent tournaments are some ways through which players can show their wisdom.

Another Way To Show Wisdom

Players can automatically fulfill the requirement for ‘Wisdom’ if they play through “The Warble of a Smitten Knight” side quest. Players will be presented with a few choices regarding how to resolve Vivienne’s curse situation. To satisfy the requirement for ‘Wisdom’, Geralt must choose to lift her curse. In doing so, Vivienne will be free from her curse and players will be one step closer to acquiring Aerondight.

Compassion

Geralt Prepares to Fight Shaelmar

The earliest opportunity players get to show their compassion is during the main quest named 'The Beast of Toussaint'. At the tourney grounds, they will face a powerful Shaelmaar that they can choose to either put down or spare its life. If the players choose to let it live, it counts as a compassionate act. In addition to that, there is another chance for players to show compassion in the main quest 'La Cage au Fou'.

After players lift the Spotted Wight's curse and transform it back into the woman named Marlene, they will bring her back to the vineyard. A few days later in-game, players can talk to her and ask her to stay at the vineyard.

Alternate Option For Showing Compassion

The general rule of thumb with ‘Compassion’ is to be sympathetic during conversations and while making decisions in the game. One such opportunity can be found during “The Big Game Hunter” quest. When the choice comes up, players must free the panther that has been caught in the trap. They must also talk to the Count’s people to learn that his daughter has been extremely ill. And when the Count invites Geralt to a gathering, players must talk to him and ask about his daughter. Doing all three will show that Geralt possesses the virtue of ‘Compassion’.

Generosity

Geralt Gets His Shoes Shined

Players will have the opportunity to show their generosity during a few events in the game. The easiest way to do so is during the main quest line when players meet the shoeshine boy. The boy will ask players for a small fee for information on Detlaff. They will need to pay the boy without negotiating or using the Axii. Players will get another chance to show that they possess the 'Generous' virtue when the boy brings the letter from Yennefer or Triss. The boy can be found in Beauclair following the 'Blood Run' quest.

Another Option For Proving Generosity

Players will have a challenge demonstrating their ‘Generosity’ during the game, as they will need their hard-earned money for equipment and supplies. However, there are a few ways for Geralt to demonstrate his ‘Generosity’, one which happens during the side quest “A Portrait of the Witcher as an Old Man”. Geralt must play through the quest and then buy the painting for 1,000 coins.

Fight For The Sword

Aerondight Sword floats in mid air being gifted to Geralt

Once players have demonstrated that they possess the five chivalric virtues, they must return to the hermit at the lake. He will give players their last challenge, to beat him in battle. The Hermit uses water attacks which are easy to telegraph and dodge, if players are quick on their toes then they will have little difficulty defeating him. The only thing they need to make sure of is to be close to the level required by the quest. Once The Hermit has been taken care of, the Lady of the Lake appears and grants players the Aerondight sword in The Witcher 3.
