The Wii U is trending on Twitter yet again this week as people talk about the upcoming Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury port as well as their memories of the system and its other unique games.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is an enhanced port of Super Mario 3D World, which was originally for the Wii U. After Nintendo's impressive Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury trailer was revealed on Tuesday, the Wii U began trending on Twitter. People began sharing their memories of the system, and talking about what games from it still needed to be ported to the Switch.
It is much the same today as it was on Tuesday. People are discussing their favorite games on the system and sharing memories of what made it so great. Memories of the system's music, features, and what made it unique. Even as games like the original Mario Maker shut down, some people still play their Wii U's to this very day.
The game that kicked off this discussion, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, includes not only a port of the Wii U game Super Mario 3D World, but also an extra game called Bowser's Fury. Nintendo has described Bowser's Fury as a shorter, standalone experience that won't require the player to complete Super Mario 3D World before they can start it. Its gameplay actually looks to be more like a traditional 3D Super Mario game, with an open world and adjustable camera. The player will have to collect Cat Shines in order to activate the Giga Bell which will allow them to become Giga Cat Mario and fight Fury Bowser. This is how they will unlock new islands and expand the game area.
The Wii U had some amazing games, but the system's poor sales meant that many of them didn't sell well and went underappreciated. Right now there are only nine first-party Wii U games have not yet to be ported to the Switch. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles X or Nintendo Land still have yet to make their way to the newer system. Bringing these games over would give Nintendo a chance to share these games with a larger audience, while making the company some money as well.
Of course, Nintendo can't focus only on ports if it wants to remain the market leader in so many different territories. Wii U ports are great, but the Switch needs new, innovative games to stay relevant.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury will launch on February 12, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
