Console rivalries have existed since the emergence of the gaming market. It is therefore unsurprising that certain manufacturers have had negative thoughts about their competition. However, very few people had stronger thoughts than the former president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi. The success of the PlayStation 1 took Nintendo by surprise and the console opened up new genres of video games.

The PlayStation 1 was the beginning of the most commercially successful home-based consoles ever. However, at its original launch, it was unclear whether it could stand alone and become a force to be reckoned with. Utilizing adult themes and a host of original titles, the console managed to carve out an extremely popular niche. This undoubtedly took Nintendo by surprise and sparked a less than positive response from the late Yamauchi.

Hiroshi Yamauchi claimed that the Nintendo 64 sold fewer units than the PS1 because gamers "[like] to be alone in their rooms and play depressing games." This was a strong reaction from the former president of Nintendo, and it likely reflected frustrations at consumer purchases. With that said, the PlayStation 1 did offer darker games such as Resident EvilAlone in the Dark, and Grand Theft Auto. While these games were tonally different to Nintendo the claim that players like to be depressed seems to be a statement made without rationally analyzing the gaming market.

There may have been some bad blood between Sony and Nintendo at the time, not only did the companies have competing consoles but a failed joint business venture. There had been plans for Sony and Nintendo to collaborate on a console. While it may have seemed that an established manufacturer like Nintendo would manage to continue to succeed after the end of this relationship, Sony quickly turned the tables. Since then both companies have managed to find an audience and a great deal of success, but it seems that the popularity of the PlayStation took many by surprise.

The PlayStation 1 opened the world up to new styles of games with engaging storylines, unusual game mechanics, and disc-based games. The impact of the console was huge, and it caused Nintendo to rethink its strategy and adapt. While Nintendo may have been shocked at the success of the PS1, the company managed to rectify the situation and share the market with its competitors in future generations.
