That's right: a new Playstation 3 is on the way, and it's hitting the shores of Japan first. The above-pictured sexy beast is the new white PS3, which will have a larger hard-drive than its predecessors.
It's still available in black, but the new Classic White will be making a first-time appearance on foreign shores within the month. This starts on July 29th (for all of our Japanese friends who like to read English websites).Within Japan, the current generation PlayStation 3's are all produced with 120 and 250 gigabyte hard drives. These will be phased out, and replaced with 160 and 320 gigabyte versions. Now, for those of us wondering when it will be arriving in North America, Sony has declined to comment (the old "We'll consider every possibility based on the market demands, but have nothing to announce at this point in time" shindig), but it'd be a pretty surprising decision if we didn't see them arriving shortly after.
I mean, come on, that looks good!
By converting good ol' foreign currency, we can even tell you how much the Classic White PS3's should cost on our native soil: five hundred and ninenty nine US dollars. Okay, just kidding - for old times sake - here's the real deal: the 160 GB costs ¥29,980 an the 320 GB costs ¥34,980. That's USD $340 and USD $400 respectively. In all cases, that's not too bad of a price to pay.
There's no word on if a special bundle will be made - there won't be one for Japan, so it's likely just another color option. However, that won't mean different retailers won't add a select number of games to hype the release of the new Whitey, so anyone with a scope on buying a Playstation 3 might want to take a look around before making a purchase. Because really, it's just not a Playstation 3 without LittleBigPlanet.
It's also not a Playstation 3 without that sexy logo font. Mmm, Clarendon Bold Expanded!
Remember that the Classic White Playstation 3 hasn't been announced for Europe or North America yet, so don't go reaching for your wallets yet!
What do you think, Ranters? Do you like the look of the new white PS3? More importantly, do you like the look of it moreso than the black one? Are you afraid of answering that question in case you somehow sound racist? But seriously, tell us your thoughts - we'd love to see if this might be a hit on the homefront.
