Westworld star Jeffrey Wright recently shared a photo that suggested the fourth season of the hit HBO series has started filming. The upcoming season of the hit dystopian series is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, Westworld is based on the 1973 film of the same name. The first season, which aired in 2016, centered on a technologically advanced theme park that consisted of android hosts. Westworld's cast includes Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores Abernathy, Thandiwe Newton as Maeve Millay, and Luke Hemsworth as Ashley Stubbs. The series has won nine Emmy Awards out of 54 nominations, with Wright earning three nods for his portrayal of Bernard Lowe.
While details on the forthcoming season of Westworld have yet to be released, Wright shared a behind-the-scenes photo of his on-set chair labeled, “Bernard.” In the caption, the actor said, “Good morning…old friend,” which is a reference to his character’s creator Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins). Fans last saw Wright’s Bernard transport within the Valley Beyond after learning what Dolores put inside of his head. The Head of the Programming Division at Westworld awakened in a room full of dust, which suggested that years have passed since Bernard entered the sublime.
The latest season of Westworld received mixed reviews from fans and critics, with many taking issues with the show’s complicated time-loops and redundant storylines. Season 3 picked up three months after the events of the second season and introduced new faces like Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, Black Swan’s Vincent Cassel, and Sons of Anarchy’s Tommy Flanagan. Nolan teased that he can’t wait for Harris’ The Man in Black to kill everyone in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Aurora Perrineau, who notably played Dani Powell in Fox’s Prodigal Son, was recently cast in a key supporting role for season 4.
Wright has a busy year in front of him because he has supporting roles in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Malcolm D. Lee’s Space Jam: A New Legacy, and the forthcoming James Bond film No Time to Die. Wright will also star as the Watcher in the upcoming animated Marvel series What If…? for Disney Plus. Created by A.C Bradley, What If…? is based on the comics of the same name and explores what would happen if major moments from the MCU occurred differently. Wright’s The Watcher observes the multiverse and narrates the series. The large ensemble cast includes Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter/Captain Britain, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger.
Next March, Wright will appear as Commissioner James Gordon in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The blockbuster serves as a reboot of the iconic film franchise and stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot/Penguin. The film is set during the second year of the Dark Knight's career of fighting crime and follows his battle with the Riddler.
