Fans have been looking forward to We Happy Few for years, ever since it was first announced and successfully funded through Kickstarter. However, those in Australia were nearly denied access to the game after it was denied classification last month for its depiction of drug use. Now that decision has been successfully appealed by Compulsion Games, and We Happy Few is no longer banned in Australia.

We Happy Few has been rated R18+ by the Australian Classification Review Board, and will be available in Australia when the game launches worldwide on August 10 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Better yet, Compulsion Games didn't have to make any changes to We Happy Few to get its classification, meaning Australian fans will be able to play through the same version of the game as everybody else.

As previously stated, the main reason why We Happy Few was initially denied classification in Australia was for its depiction of drug use. More specifically, the way drug use in the game is tied to "incentives and rewards." Basically, many people in the We Happy Few universe abuse a drug called Joy that makes them happy without ever having to experience any kind of bad feeling or memory. Players can make their life in We Happy Few a bit easier if they use the drug, as they won't be attacked as often by the enemies in the game.

While this does technically "reward" players for using the drug, We Happy Few actually seems to have a message of anti-drug use. The people in the game are depicted as violent psychopaths due to their overuse of the drug, and all have basically lost their humanity. We Happy Few certainly doesn't glorify drug use, as using the drug just makes players more like the violent people in the dystopian society they're trapped in.

Regardless, We Happy Few fans in Australia will likely be pleased that the game's ban has been reversed and it will release in their region uncensored. Now it just needs to live up to all the hype it's built over these past few years once it finally launches next month.
