After years of waiting, the time has finally come. Announced via the upcoming DC FanDome schedule, it seems fans will be getting their first look at WB Montreal's newest project, which is all but confirmed to be the next entry in the widely acclaimed Batman Arkham franchise.

The actual reveal will take place on August 22 at 10:30 (PT) and will be held over a 20-minute event which will also include a Q/A session with WB Montreal itself. The event's description on the schedule reads "Gamers! You won’t want to miss this first look at an exciting new game, and Q&A with its developers."

Of course, for those not clued up on the storied history of WB Montreal's newest take on the Batman Arkham series, the developers behind Arkham Origins' next iteration of the franchise has been one of the worst kept secrets in the games' industry. Originally, the team behind the upcoming reboot was looking to work on a title based around Bruce Wayne's son Damian, with the sequel set to take place in an almost apocalyptic version of Gotham City. According to leaks - including now accessible concept art - the sequel would've seen a slate of more obscure villains take the spotlight, including The Judge, Flamingo, a female version of Black Mask, and even notorious Flash villain Gorilla Grodd.

The project was sadly canned, however, and a new, allegedly Court of Owls focused Arkham game took its place. After months of unconfirmed leaks and rumors, fans finally got a new update on Batman's future from WB itself, who posted a series of cryptic images teasing a return of The Dark Knight. The one unifying caption between these bizarre teasers was the phrase "capture the Knight," which many have taken to indicate that the game may take place from the perspective of Batman's allies rather than the Caped Crusader himself. Several rumors have corroborated the theory, so perhaps WB's newest game will be a direct sequel to Knight's climactic moments.

Either way, it's great to finally have confirmation that WB Montreal is showing off its newest game, especially as fans have been clamoring to return to the Batman Arkham universe since Knight's conclusion back in 2015. Alongside that, it seems DC FanDome will also give players their first look at the superbly titled Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which will be helmed by the former developers of the Arkham franchise, Rocksteady. Seeing both titles featured at the same showcase is a fantastic indicator that DC is bringing the big guns for the next-generation of consoles.

A new Batman Arkham game is rumored to be in development.
