News is moving quickly regarding the rumored Warner Bros. fighting game described as Super Smash Bros., but with characters from Warner Bros.' own franchises. The project is rumored to be named Multiversus and will feature fighters including Batman, The Lord of the Rings wizard Gandalf, and even Scooby Doo's Shaggy. New details have also been shared about Warner Bros. plans for post-launch support of Multiversus, including who might be its first DLC character -- the Space Jam 2 version of basketball superstar LeBron James.

In his latest GrubbSnax podcast, Games Beat reporter Jeff Grubb expanded on his earlier reporting regarding Multiversus. He shared several details, acknowledging that much was still up in the air and could be changed prior to the game's release -- or even its announcement. One of those details was plans for post-launch character DLC. LeBron James, who stars in the recent Warner Bros.-produced film Space Jam: A New Legacy, is being considered for the game's first DLC offering.

LeBron James may seem like an odd character to be released for a fighting game, but is apparently an example of Warner Bros. strategy for Multiversus' post-launch content plans. Warner Bros. wants to capitalize on something Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has done well. That being pulling in players' attention for announcements due to the surprise factor of the reveals, while also encouraging fans to cheer for their favorite characters to be added.

Another detail that Grubb shared during his segment on Multiversus is that the fighting game could be a free-to-play title. Grubb chose his language carefully here, saying that the game "could" be free-to-play, rather than saying outright that it is. The final decision likely hasn't been made yet and could change based on market conditions, like whether or not Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is successful through post-launch or not.

Lastly, and this is obviously a heavily objective statement, Grubb says that his source says Multiversus looks "cheap." Exactly what that means remains to be seen. If Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a AAA project, perhaps they mean Multiversus looks more like a AA or indie platform fighter. Alternatively, it could look of similar quality to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

Regardless, it's astonishing that within a week Multiversus has gone from being a meme about Shaggy fighting Scorpion from Mortal Kombat to what appears to be a very real project. Within a year, fans could be in a Multiversus match featuring Steven Universe, Harley Quinn, Bugs Bunny, and Jake the Dog. Expect to hear more about Multiversus before too long.

Multiversus is a rumored unannounced project from WB.
