Xbox's big closing announcement during its X019 convention opening ceremony was the highly anticipated tactical RPG Wasteland 3. inXile Entertainment didn't disappoint, debuting a brand new gameplay trailer and also announcing Wasteland 3's release plans. The trailer teases the complexity of Wasteland 3's gameplay and snowy Colorado setting. Excited Wasteland fans won't have to wait too long, as inXile confirmed that Wasteland 3 will be launching May 19, 2020 on both PC and Xbox One.

Wasteland 3 is, of course, a heavy-duty tactical RPG. Think Divinity: Original Sin 2 but with a post-apocalyptic setting and gunplay akin to an XCOM game. Players will be able to customize their character to their personal liking, and can also apparently customize their in-game vehicle. They'll then be treated to an epic story about survival in the "savage frozen lands of Colorado," where the player is leading a growing settlement of wastelanders. It bears repeating that Wasteland 3 is a narrative-focused game, written by the writers behind Torment: Tides of Numenera.

In the new trailer, inXile also briefly mentions that Wasteland 3 will feature cooperative multiplayer. It isn't entirely clear whether some of the gameplay being shown includes an example of cooperative multiplayer, but it seems unlikely. That's the kind of feature more likely to be showcased in a trailer or demo entirely on its own.

It will be interesting to see whether Wasteland 3 employs co-op akin to Divinity: Original Sin or a more traditional form of co-op where one player joins another's campaign as a an uninvolved figure in the narrative.

For those worried that Wasteland 3 may be too challenging of an experience to get into, or that the game being the third in the franchise means it's unapproachable, inExile has an answer. Prior to debuting the new trailer, inXile confirmed that Wasteland 3 is entirely standalone from previous games in the franchise and is designed with new players in mind. It's not going to pull any punches in its story, but Wasteland 3 will be built to welcome as many new players to try it out as makes sense.

Wasteland 3 releases May 19, 2020 on PC and Xbox One.
