A surprise weekend game announcement came recently from the developers of Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster. Frontier Developments is working on a real-time strategy game based on the 2015 Warhammer Age of Sigmar miniature game, Warhammer Age of Sigmar being the modern iteration of the original Warhammer.

The reveal comes from a press release on Frontier's official website, confirming that Frontier had signed an IP license with Warhammer property owner Games Workshop. The license is for a real-time strategy game for PC, consoles, and streaming platforms and will tentatively launch in Fiscal Year 2023.

Frontier chief executive David Braben briefly described the new partnership, lauding the agreement between "two such well-established and world-class creative UK companies." Braben went on to describe the Warhammer Age of Sigmar RTS as "immersive and accessible," reiterating that it's not just a PC game but a console game, too.

One detail worth keeping in mind is that the game isn't necessarily named Warhammer Age of Sigmar, that's simply the property that's been licensed. The RTS is likely to have a much more focused scope and a unique title so that it stands out for itself. Think Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor being a The Lord of the Rings licensed property. The Warhammer Age of Sigmar game is years away, so don't expect more news or even an official title for some time.

The Warhammer Age of Sigmar RTS launches FY 2023 on PC, consoles, and streaming platforms.
