Warhammer Age of Sigmar is getting yet another title to add to its ever-growing roster of video games. Warhammer AoS: Soul Arena, a new autobattler from Trophy Games, will feature largely automated warfare in the Mortal Realms with a variety of factions on offer.
Warhammer AoS: Soul Arena's debut trailer at Warhammer Fest didn't disclose much in terms of gameplay specifics, but the cutesy visuals indicate a new angle for the Mortal Realms setting, inferring a more comedic, slapstick tone as compared to other titles in the franchise. Bobble-headed caricatures of series mainstays, like the Stormcast Eternals, Nighthaunt, Skaven and Seraphon, make an appearance in colorful dioramas that establish Warhammer AoS: Soul Arena's lighthearted tone.
This is the first showing of Warhammer in the autobattler genre, putting it into direct competition with established titles like the recently updated Teamfight Tactics and Dota Underlords. Soul Arena enters genre with relatively few titles, yet with a dedicated fanbase- shifting these gamers to Soul Arena will test the strength of the Warhammer IP to its limits against gaming industry giants like Riot Games and Valve- developers of the previous titles, respectively.
This is yet another title in the Warhammer playbook, a franchise that has had some historically great titles like Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. Games Workshop is riding a strong and sustained period of growth, doubling down on its twin Warhammer franchises in both the gaming and cinematic spaces.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar, as the newer of Games Workshop's staples, has fewer titles going for it right now, which Warhammer AoS: Soul Arena may go some ways to redressing- though Total War: Warhammer 3's upcoming release may inadvertently cause competition between the fantasy franchises.
Warhammer AoS: Soul Arena is launching on Android, iOS and Steam later in 2021.
