For 20 years, gamers have been experiencing the Warhammer universe for themselves. From panting figures, to epic battles steeped in a rich roleplaying environment, to fantastic video games and all points in between, and THQ is taking it to the next level — with Warhammer 40K : Space Marine. From the official site:

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war…

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine takes console gamers into a savage universe where humanity fights for survival against horrific alien and demonic forces.

Today, we got a glimpse at some Space Marines destroying the Orks in the official Gamescom trailer:

The trailer had a milieu that reminded me of the rich fun of the old table top figures games, pitting human against ork in a fantastic battle for everything. THQ had this description:

The player becomes the ultimate defender of humanity — a mighty Space Marine — sent to stop the brutal Ork invasion of a vital Forge World. As the barbaric Orks rip the planet apart, it’s up to you and your battle-hardened squad of Space Marines to cut a bloody path through the Ork horde and discover what they’re so eager to find.

Warhammer

We don’t have many details beyond the trailer, just that it is a “Shoot ‘Em Up” game, brought to you by the award-winning video game developer Relic Entertainment, coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3. As it is quite early in the game’s production, not many have gotten a look at it yet, though we have seen the nickname “Gears of Warhammer” being used by those who have. It seems that there are some very distinct influences from other games, but that is not necessarily a bad thing in the current game market, where games like StarCraft 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are breaking sales records and wining the hearts of gamers around the world.

But will it stand up and be a winner? Only time will tell. Even with an epic history like Warhammer, you never know what will win the gamer’s hearts.

Are you excited for “Gears of Warhammer?” Can you see yourself fighting for the Space Marines, or will this title pass you by? What does this trailer say to you, is it time to fight the war?

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine is currently in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, and is expected to ship sometime in 2011.
