Warhammer 40K is no stranger to brutal close combat, so it comes as a surprise that it took as long as it did to show up on Virtual Reality headsets. Warhammer 40K: Battle Sisterwhich was previously an Oculus Quest exclusive, has shown new features and gameplay ahead of the title's port over to the Oculus Rift.

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister puts the player in the power armor of a Soroitas, a warrior-nun who fights for the Imperium of Man. As religious fanatics, it's only fitting that the gameplay shows battle against droves of Chaos heretics and daemons, fit to be blasted and hacked away by the brutal weaponry that defines 40K.

The new update for the 2020 title is bringing Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister over to the Oculus Rift from its sibling console the Quest. There are no current plans to bring Battle Sister over to the wider VR community, however, leading some to decry the title's exclusivity. The update is also adding a cooperative twist to Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister's Last Bastion horde mode, with confirmed cross-play between both Oculus platforms.

After a successful financial year, Games Workshop, owner of the Warhammer franchise, is going full steam ahead on new games and movies set in the Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi universe as well as the fantasy setting Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. While the wider Warhammer franchise has its share of historical videogame hits, Games Workshop is evidently keen to keep gamers in their universes, both on the tabletop and digitally.

Warhammer 40K: Battle Sister marked the first major showing of Warhammer on VR, though not the first, as massively popular survival-action Vermintide put out a small VR offering in 2016. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar fans will be able to sample their universe in VR with the upcoming release of Age of Sigmar: Tempestfall later in 2021.
