Warhammer 40K conjures very specific images for people. Those images are typically of extremely detailed miniatures of armored Space Marines, or perhaps a swarm of terrifying Tyranids, made of teeth and scale and insanity. For actual collectors and players, it no doubt also conjures dollar bill signs, as Warhammer 40K can be an expensive hobby, with the most expensive Warhammer models costing hundreds of dollars.

Granted, it's an investment that fans of Warhammer 40k are willing to make for how much fun it is. There are traditionally two parts to Warhammer 40K: the game, and the models themselves. The game is a war simulator in a vast, extremely expansive universe between multiple factions. It's distinct, powerful, and visually fantastic, heavily inspiring games like Starcraft. The models themselves are a big deal as well, being very detailed no matter how large or small they are. Collecting and painting those models is a huge part of the draw for many Warhammer aficionados.

With the expense of the models, add ons, and painting equipment, Warhammer 40k is an expensive hobby. This makes the fact that the game's rulebooks are also pretty pricy a very sore point. Rulebooks are typically needed for a role-playing game, and in many cases that's fine. The rulebook is almost all players need for a game like Dungeons & Dragons, but that big price doesn't work when the other components are similarly expensive. Fortunately, it looks like that trend is changing. Earlier this month, Warhammer 40k's Games Workshop released the 9th core rules online for free. In addition, a new app has been released that contains the core rules for free, plus additional rules with a subscription.

The app allows players to access the current core rules at any time. Familiarizing oneself with the basics is one of the most important Warhammer 40k tips any player can get. With the app, players will have these essentials even when offline or on the go.

There are many other supplemental rulesets that can be added to the base rules. Some of these are actually necessary depending on a player's faction. Instead of paying for each sourcebook, or Codex, separately, the app allows access to the current ones at a $5 monthly subscription. Finally, players can know all the secrets of the Space Marines at a reasonable price.

With a new game coming out and an affordable ruleset, there is no better time to give Warhammer 40k a look. Anyone interested should pick up the rules and see if they want to try the whole experience out. Give the app a look and learn why the Tyranids are terrifying.
