Warcraft has grown and evolved in many different ways since the franchise's roots as a popular series of strategy games in the 1990s. Warcraft has spawned countless video game titles, a long-running series of novels, and the most popular MMORPG ever created in World of Warcraft. Earlier this year, Blizzard mentioned that the Warcraft franchise would be making new forays into the world of mobile gaming following the success of titles like Hearthstone.

Blizzard's Warcraft series began in 1994 with the initial release subtitled Orcs & Humans. The first title was immediately popular with fans and spawned several sequels, launching Blizzard to the forefront of the PC gaming market. Since its inception, Warcraft has become one of the most popular franchises in the PC market, spawning the mega-successful World of Warcraft boasting tens of millions of players at its peak. Now, the franchise is preparing to make its second entry into the mobile market and a recent job listing gives an inkling of how a Warcraft mobile title may expand the universe.

Blizzard recently posted a job listing on job search website Indeed looking for a Senior Concept Artist for the unannounced mobile Warcraft project. The job description mentions the creation of concept art for characters and creatures among several other aspects of the game, specifically referencing the possibility of creating new characters. New characters could be joining the rich roster of pre-existing Warcraft characters with many of the franchise's most popular characters like Illidan Stormrage and Sylvanas Windrunner becoming household names in the gaming industry.

The Warcraft mobile titles would be the most recent in a string of mobile titles from some of Blizzard's most popular titles. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft from 2014 has grown into one of the company's most popular games and helped to spawn a legion of online collectible card games. Diablo Immortal was announced during Blizzcon 2018 and is currently scheduled for a 2021/22 release and Overwatch was rumored to be coming to mobile earlier this year.

Warcraft's reach has extended far outside the video games industry due to the franchise's massive popularity. Director Duncan Jones brought the popular fantasy franchise to the silver screen with the 2016 film simply titled Warcraft and the franchise has received novelized expansions of the universe almost annually for the past two decades. Blizzard has consistently looked for new platforms to push the franchise to new heights and the upcoming title will hope to build on the success Hearthstone saw in the mobile market.

Two Warcraft mobile games are currently in development with no official release date.
