The next-generation of video games is still largely a secret, but the general consensus seems to be that next-gen will see a huge focus on video game streaming. To that end, we know Microsoft is looking to enter the game streaming market with its Project xCloud service, PlayStation already has PlayStation Now, and Google just recently pulled the curtain back on its ambitious Stadia platform. However, it seems like retail giant Walmart is looking to throw its hat in the ring as well.

Citing multiple anonymous sources close to Walmart, US Gamer claims that Walmart is actively looking into making a video game streaming service of its own. Walmart has reportedly had discussions with developers and publishers about its potential game streaming service earlier this year, and has even been talking to potential partners at GDC 2019. However, it's unclear exactly the scope of Walmart's plans, or if they will ever come to fruition.

It's unlikely that Walmart will develop its game console, as its a retail store and not a developer. However, Walmart may still be looking into a Netflix-style service that would stream games instantly as a way to get ahead of the market, as the gaming industry is definitely heading in that direction.

While Walmart may very well be looking into launching its own game streaming service, it's possible that it won't go through with its plans. After all, the video game market is already a crowded one, and established video game companies already have their own streaming services lined up and ready to go that will have exclusive games Walmart would be unable to provide.

Google Stadia will have first-party exclusives, and it's safe to assume Project xCloud will as well, especially since Microsoft is already offering its first-party titles for free through Game Pass. It's unclear if Sony will expand the scope of PlayStation Now to include brand new releases, but at the very least, exclusives should be added to the service at some point after launch.

By the end of the year, we should have a clearer picture of just how big game streaming will be for the next-generation of video game platforms. Whether or not Walmart joins the competition remains to be seen.
