The future of The Walking Dead: The Final Season has been hanging in the balance since developer Telltale Studios announced its planned closure. Now it appears that the developer has requested the game be pulled from digital distributors.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season was available across a wide variety of digital game distribution platforms including the Xbox Games Store, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Steam, GOG, and others. As of this writing, the game is no longer available for purchase on any of these networks, with the exception of the Nintendo eShop. It's likely to disappear there as well, as the developer is apparently requesting digital sale platforms to pause any new purchases, according to GOG.

It's unclear if this will impact the physical copies of the game or not. Telltale hasn't yet commented on whether the November physical release of the game is still happening, but it is still available for pre-order on multiple retailers' sites. If the developer manages to work with a secondary company to finish The Walking Dead: The Final Season, this release will likely be delayed, though that's likely still a preferable choice for most fans over having it cancelled outright.

The Walking Dead Final Season Gameplay

Until Telltale makes a statement on this move, one can only speculate on why it would place a hold on digital sales of the game. It may be due to the new efforts to band together with another studio to finish the final two episodes of the season. Alternatively, it could be in an effort to prevent anyone new from buying the game while its future is still up in the air, at least under its current description. Since players have been buying the game with the promise of four completed episodes by the end of its season, it could amount to false advertising to continue selling the game under those terms.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season may still shamble to the finish line, but new players will have to wait until Telltale chooses to make the game available again. With any luck, the season will meet a satisfying conclusion, especially since gamers and reviewers largely enjoyed The Walking Dead: The Final Season's Episode 2.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is out now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
