VRChat is a popular virtual world platform that lets players interact in a 3D environment. As the name suggests, users create 3D avatars and connect with other humans in virtual reality. VRChat also comes with a Desktop Mode for fans who want to use a mouse and a keyboard instead of a VR headset.

VRChat has recently come under fire for banning mods and implementing Easy Anti-Cheat. According to the developers, the main purpose of this update was to combat “malicious modified clients” used to harass players. On July 26, they commented on the negative feedback received regarding this update but stated that they don’t have any plans to revert it. The post then discussed the steps the development team will take to address players’ concerns, with accessibility being a priority. However, it seems like fans are not fully convinced by this answer and are sharing their frustrations by posting negative reviews.

Users are review bombing VRChat on Steam for the ban on mods and the addition of Easy Anti-Cheat. As seen on its Steam page, recent reviews are overwhelmingly negative when compared to the mostly positive overall reception. Users posting negative reviews are against the use of Easy Anti-Cheat and are review bombing VRChat to show their disagreement. Many gamers claim that Easy Anti-Cheat lowers the performance and makes it more prone to stability issues. Additionally, it looks like players were using many quality-of-life and accessibility mods which are also stopped by this update.

VRChat steam page review boming

One player mentions that they have used VRChat for 3,864 hours and claim that it saved their life. They appear extremely hurt by this update, and state that it punishes people for using mods to assist with playing VRChat, such as support for sign language and an AI upscaling system. Some users claim to have stopped playing the game and even uninstalled it because of the Easy Anti-Cheat update. Although, a few have not changed their review from positive to negative.

Review bombing is fairly common these days. It looks like every popular release is review bombed for one reason or another, although it often doesn’t happen without solid ground. A majority of the marquee games released this year, including Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and Dying Light 2 have all been review bombed for various reasons. This list includes Diablo Immortal as well, which at one point had the lowest user score in Metacritic’s history.

VRChat is available now on Oculus, PC, and Viveport.
